How do I setup a VPN or do I need it

So I installed a security app and it suggested I setup a vpn when I connected to my secure WiFi router. Problem is I know what vpn is or what it is meant to do up to the basics.

I do not however know everything I need to create one. Some have said they use their business network but I don't have or work for a business.

So how do I set it up or do I even need it?
I also heard someone mention a subscription which turns me away as I sadly can't afford or if I can don't know if I can continue to pay.
