The last time I did it you press up volume, down Volume, then the back button while the phone is booting. This was on a LG phone which may be different. You can Google your exact sequence.

I utilize old cell phones by bypassing the carriers splash screen and program to have about a dozen little tablets. I use them as monitors, security devices, GPS Unit, etc. and have been doing so for years without issue or 'going back'.
