I'm leaving the country and only want to use my phone on wi-fi. How do I turn off roaming?
I called Verizon customer service and asked if my service included Toronto, Canada. She said no and gave me the charges I would incur if using voice and data.
She said to disable roaming completely. She also said if I was on wi-fi, that I could text without incurring any charges. Is this correct? I thought wi-fi was just data.
Anyway, thanks.

Menu-settings - more settings - mobile network - global data roaming access

Select disable roaming

Texts do count as text, not data and are charged according to the plan or, if no plan, the pay as you go rate. International rate and plan differ from the domestic one typically

Calls and texts sent over wifi should be free

To turn off your phone and completely disable calls/text/data via your carrier: Turn on Airplane mode (turns all radios off). Then to just use wifi, just turn on wifi, your other radios should still be off. You are correct: normal texts go over the carrier voice connection, not the data connection.

I used my phone in this way while travelling overseas last year - rented a mifi so I had data everywhere, and used Skype for the few local calls I needed.

I believe the free texts the rep was talking about was through Google Voice. It's all data but still allows you to text.

You can also make free calls through grooveip or similar app over wifi.

There are a lot of interesting apps to switch off the roaming, this one for example works perfectly and it works with Lollipop ¡¡
