I have 2 - a Verzion Dev Ed and a Verizon Moto Maker - and I want to unlock the bootloaders on both.

Do I request an unlock code from Motorola? Or is there some other way?

Yes. On Moto's website is the unlock code and steps for unlocking.

will verizon know I did this?

I don't think they would know unless you took the phone in and if you need service then you should go to motorola anyway.

I am not sure what the concern is though. Is there a reason you are concerned about verizon knowing?

It voids the warranty on the moto maker Moto X.
Yes it does. The original poster was inquiring about the DE Moto X so I was confused. If you have the Moto maker version then you are correct.

I have both and I want to root the moto maker moto x but not sure if I want to unlock bootloader if it will void the warranty.

That is understandable. Sorry I misread your post. I would root the Moto X DE and leave the Moto maker if I were in that situation. I have not felt a need to root this phone yet. I normally do but not with this phone.

What are you looking to do when you root? Maybe I just need a reason. Lol.

I want to be able to WiFi tether for free on Verizon with unlimited data plan. The KitKat update patched the exploit that FoxFi was using to allow it. They may find another, but for sure you can do it with root.

I can root without unlocking the bootloader, though. Just trying to decide whether or not to unlock the bootloader, too, because I would hate to go through all of the trouble of rooting only to later decide to unlock the bootloader and then have to reroot. Unlocking the bootloader wipes the device.

Since you are on KitKat you will have to wipe the device no matter what. Root requires a downgrade in OS in order to use the exploit.

To the OP, just so you know, once you unlock the boot loader, there currently is no way to relock it.

Unless something has changed and I'm out of the loop, you aren't going to be able to unlock the bootloader on your non-Developer Edition MX.

I think Motorola will give you an unlock code for the non-Dev Eds, but it voids your warranty.

Unlocking the bootloader on your Dev Edition will void the warranty. The reason why AT&T and Verizon offer the Dev Edition is because the standard X's will not be unlocked... unless this has changed: Bootloader Unlock Supported on Verizon? - xda-developers
It's definitely changed from what I have read - Motorola reversed itself and is not voiding the warranty on the Dev Eds and will give you an unlock code for the non-Dev Eds, but that will void the warranty on those.
