How do user accounts work in 5.0?

How do user accounts work in 5.0

I know how to add/delete and manage users. My question is more specific. Let's say a guest logs into my phone then what happens to my apps that were running on my owner profile. Do they continue to receive notifications or are they suspended until I log back?

A good example might be that I don't allow guests to make phone calls but someone calls me. What happens then.
