How do you highlight text?

Hi guys its my first time owning an android phone, i have the mytouch 4g. If im typing a text message, and say, I wanna erase the whole thing, on my blackberry i'd hold Alt and scroll, which will highlight everything so i can hit delete. Now how do I do that with my mt4g?
