How does one troubleshoot an S-Pen that isn't working?

Last night I used the S-Pen from my Galaxy S4 Tablet. Worked fine writing up notes in Snote. This morning it stopped working all together. I tried it on my Note 9, didn't work at all. Tried the S-Pen from my Note 9 on the S4, worked perfectly.

Can the S-Pen just stop working like what happened, so it is now ready for re-cycling? Can the nib cause the S-Pen to stop functioning?

Replacing the nib is one of the troubleshooting steps, so that's the next thing I'd try.
