Assuming you do not mean the S2 3G (with which has a mobile phone connection), the Gear S2 needs to be in bluetooth (10 meters) or wifi range to get a GPS signal from you phone (and/or notifications). If you don't care about getting notifications or tracking your exact location as you jog, the S2 will still track your heartrate with S Health when it's not connected to your phone.
