How "future proofed" do you think the Note 9 is?

Re: How "future proofed" do you think the Note 9 is?

IME every smartphone I've tried to use more than 2 years gets slower than tolerable. Factory reset makes no dif. I don't believe it is possible to future proof a cell phone to still be tolerable for more than 3 years. Whether it's planned obsolescence or app software updates for more modern hardware my bottom line is don't expect to use a phone much more than 2 years if you do much more than talk text email

Virtually everyone crazy enough to. spend hours talking about cell phones HERE will WANT 5G the second it. is available. We will be chomping at the bit! LOL

What smartphones have you owned? I have an iPhone 6 that is still running fine and an iPhone 7 that is on iOS 12 now and still fine as well.

Re: How "future proofed" do you think the Note 9 is?

My G5 & V20 still cranks like the day I took them out of the box.
My V20 is just approaching 2 years old now.I'm looking at Note 9 because I'm getting a lot of screen ghosting or whatever you call it when previous screen is a little visible on the next screen. It is annoying. The only reasons I still have V20 are flat screen, 16/9 ratio, ir blaster and removable battery. None of those will be available again on a flagship and I will dearly miss them. That said even with Android 8 and a reset my phone is way slower than when new. When I bought it V20 was faster than my returned Note 7

My Note 3 is S L O O W W W W

I can't stay with the same device for over an year. I'd get bored with it. How do people with iphones not get bored using it for years?

I'm the same! I will keep the Note 9 till the Note 10 and either sell and pay the difference or try and get a great upgrade/trade in deal

I guess you mean screen retention. Yeah I had that awhile back but I sent it back under warranty. Not really sure it was permanent but it would take awhile to return to normal. If your V20 lags it could be some of your apps.

No question it is apps but I had the same apps. I almost never add new apps. Updates often are the root of the problem. I have auto updates disabled in Playstore but now many apps tell you to update and stop working if you don't update. I notice now that I get freezes when I type too fast too. Sometimes I have to restart. Probably due to Android 8 update.

My V20 is still under warranty but if I went in complaining of screen retention I'm afraid they'd give me a V30 which has none of the V20 features I love.

They most likely replace the display. I got my unit back.

Highly doubtful. Much more cost effective for them to send you a refurbished V20. Worst case scenario, if they send you a V30, return it & keep your V20, or sell the V30 and buy a used V20. You'll likely fare better that way

4G speed is typically between 4-12mb/sec. 5G is supposed to be 30mb/s and up to 100mb/sec - comparable to a mid-high end home connection, making connected devices (such as smart cars) controllable through a phone - thus the hype

4g runs 30mbps consistently where I live. That's good enough for a few years. We will probably never need to Stream 4k video ever bc phone screens won't be much of a difference compared to 2k unless the devices are 7+inches or more.

Heck, 1080p is still more than enough on a phone, and 720p very adequate (which I can stream on YouTube with little problem on my 3.3Mb/s home cable connection). So far, all I see 5G providing is the ability to burn through data limits quicker. I'm still at a loss to understand the cultish hype over it.

5G will be more relevant when controlling connected vehicles, remote machinery, appliances, etc over a smartphone becomes more mainstream. Until then, mostly hype.

1080 or 4K resolution on such small screens - now that one still has me scratching my head...

It is more so for the latency. People hype speed because that is all most consumers who don't understand networking see because that is what is put out there in the public w/ the T-Mobile CEO and others. Speed is definitely nice -- I love my Gigabit connection at home but 5G is more so about latency being extremely low which would make connected cars and such a reality. While 50 ms is good on LTE you don't want 50ms delays or higher when cars are trying to communicate where they are and such.

Stuff like that.

Thanks for the explanation and it makes sense. I know how latency can impact performance with precise actions from studying RC helicopters. Call me an old fogy (GET OFF MY LAWN!), but I still prefer to drive my own vehicles, not let them drive themselves. Considering the problems I have with just lane departure and crash mitigation systems on my work truck, actual autonomy has a LONG way to go. The current systems just cause me more grief than anything, and that's on a setup designed to handle a semi.

I do as well -- I wasn't endorsing driverless cars (I am still unsure and enjoy driving my truck very much) but I was just using that as a good example of what 5G could bring -- the low latency for things of that nature. Much more real-time data due to low latency basically making it real time (or so damn close).

Re: How "future proofed" do you think the Note 9 is?

Then I'd do what use my old Note 3 while they fix it?

I'm not sure how to answer that. If that's your only backup...yes if it still works. Might need a different SIM card

Don't know who your insurance carrier is, but I have Assurion through T-Mobile and they send me a replacement overnight

Technically this is warranty with LG through VZW. Warranty extended to 2 years if you bought Assurian BUT when it is not due to loss or accident it is the factory warranty covering my crap screen. Problem is the issue is sporadic and transient so if I brought it in and showed them and they turned the phone off then on screen would look fine.

This is OT. Let's get back onto op questions
