how good is the fingerprint scanner?

Its the best finger print scanner I've ever used on a Samsung phone. In the past I've always disabled them on samsung phones because they would keep failing and then I'd get locked out for 30 seconds. I haven't had any problems this time round despite its placemet.

Ignoring placement, how do you find the reliability of the fingerprint scanner? I'm almost 2 weeks in with my note 8 and found it brilliant for the first week. But ever since then it's been inconsistent at times, sometimes not working at all. I've tried having an additional scan of my 2 index fingers which seems to help at first but then later the same problems.

I came from a s7 edge and going the scanner poor on that but then the skin on my thumb isn't that great so I put it down to that. My index fingers are much better so was really pleased when it was flawless for the first week. I just don't know what changed?

I'm using smart lock now which gets round the problem but if I ever have to use Samsung pay I want to know it's reliable

After close to two months with the note 8, I find at the end of the day that the fingerprint scanner window has accumulated enough oil from my fingers that it can be inconsistent, sometimes taking three attempts to unlock. After cleaning the window it works perfectly. I do find it interesting that using the samsung pay app, the scanner always works for me, makes me wonder if there are different levels of sensitivity.

Better than my iPhone 7 Plus. On the 7, I was having to reset my print about once per week. I set it on my Note 8 and it has been fast and spot-on for six weeks.
