How good is the multi-tasking?

I don't think anyone here is going to try to hard sell you on the evo. If you love the pre, and you're happy with the total package (hardware and software), then don't upgrade. That said, as a pre owner, I can tell you I am far more productive on the evo than I ever was on the pre. There's no comparison in the number and quality of apps.

One thing I didn't see anybody mention, is if you hold down the menu button, you get your 6 most recent apps, which if you're multitasking means you can jump back and forth between email and nav in two buttons, which is one less movement than on the pre (swipe up/button, swipe left or right, click on app) vs. (hold menu, click on app).

I also hope HP/Palm brings the heat with generation two devices, but for a sprint customer on the premier plan, you're not losing anything by taking a year long vacation to let them get it sorted out.
If you have advanced gestures on the pre, it is one swipe. It is much much faster...just holding the home button alone takes long enough when I can just swipe to the left or right.

Trust me, coming from the Pre, to me multitasking on Android is not even close! Honestly, WebOS is the absolute BEST mobile OS to date! Period. That said, multitasking on the Evo is very good. I wouldn't dream of going back to Pre unless they had the Evo type hardware. This is an awesome device!

Oh I will. Initial thought about size in pocket is..... not too bad. Because it is thinner then Pre, I didn't really notice a difference.

I actually have a little trouble with that because the phone is thinner so when standing, it might not rest against my leg when in the front pocket so I sometimes miss vibrate alerts even though the vibration is stronger than the Pre's.

and thats the vibe i am getting from all reviews, all videos i watch.. webos nailed it on the head with what they created. it's just the hardware was ****, and its too slow.

I am impressed with the EVO multi-tasking so far. I was expecting on having to close apps to get to others. Not the case.

But what if the card you want is 5 cards over?

That's swipe left four times, then click card.

Or, I can give you swipe up, tap to minimize, then tap to maximize.

Long press and tap is faster than either of those methods.

the pre is more fluid, but there is no denying the speed of the evo in that video.. the pre is probably 5-10x slower at producing apps to the forefront in a scenario like that.

Well, you don't click cards with advanced gestures. It is just like pressing back on your browser...or just like switching home screens on the Evo...one swipe and a new app. So that is just 4 swipes to get to the 5th card.

And if I wanted to have 5 cards open for some reason, I guess it wouldn't be faster. It would be very close though. In the time it takes to hold the home button, I can make 2 to 3 swipes on my pre.

If I had a video camera and the time to post it, I'd prove to you that I could do it at least as fast in that extreme example.

This. Once you get your home screen set up the way you want it, it's way faster than swapping cards on the Pre. The home screen essentially acts like a two dimensional card system. Sure you have icons instead of the app minimized, but it performs the same function.

Plus you gain speed in that the pesky browser doesn't reload the page when you switch away from it for too long, heh. And you don't have to close anything for TMC errors!

Definitely. I can navigate very quickly on the Evo as I've stated before. The hardware speed just overcomes the design of the pre. The pre just looks and feels smooth.

Really, the speed of switching apps isn't a big selling point for me. I like the way the Evo looks and functions. It is incredibly fast that fractions of a second aren't a big deal. I was just pointing out to the OP and other pre guys that if they want the same smooth multitasking feel, they will not be seeing that.

I don't think using advanced gestures to cycle through 4 cards is faster than minimizing, but to each his own. No need to make a video, I had a Pre on launch day so I'm aware of how they operate.

I guess we can agree to disagree. After having a Pre for a year and an Evo for 4 days, I'm positive that I can navigate faster on the Evo in 95% of situations. The one exception is switching between two cards next to each other using advanced gesture on the Pre.

Not sure if I am doing something wrong, but I have Task OS and it seems like I can only switch between 2 apps at a time. Any help with settings (possibly) would be appreciated. Actually it seems like if I go into the app without using the "search" key like it is setup by default it works fine.

I don't know if my experience has been different from others- but Task OS is painfully slow. I highly recommend Multitask. It looks more like Iphone4's system- but it's configurable (why do I want to see recently closed apps?) and quick to use. The only point in using ANY of these is for task killing- if you're just switching among your last 6 apps, no new app is needed- just hold the home button. Doesn't get any easier than that.

AND I hated how Pre couldn't have multiple web windows! Now I can hit the window button in the internet window and have tabbed web browsing! THAT's huge. Allowing popups or forcing popups ok but in the background is also helpful for websites that insist on using them.

This phone is POWERFUL- just unlike pre- you need to work a bit more to get it to suit your tastes.

Best thing I did was throw out a lot of the pre installed widgets and start from scratch. Now? I love this and don't miss my PRE one bit.

For those that want to switch between a couple apps fairly quickly have you tried holding down the home button? That will bring up the last 6 apps and you can switch between them.

thanks.. thread has been helpful.

Yes it has. This morning I was looking at my Pre and tonight I am looking at my EVO.

Pro:
Screen size - Browsing is just a better experience on the EVO
Apps - Lots of apps to download
Voice & Data signal - Get a better signal in my house with my EVO. Two bars in my basement.
Multitask - Although not as fluid as the Pre, I can't complain about the EVO
Landscape Viewing - More apps can be used in Landscape mode then the Pre, including Email
Spell Suggest - Very nice, especially when sending a text.

Cons:
Clunky App download - I have had trouble with about 1 out of every 4 apps I have downloaded. Downloading again solves issue.
Screen shutoff - Using Sprint Nav and screen turned off after 3 minutes. Granted I have not set any preferences yet.
Facebook Notifications - I miss the Facebook notifications that the Pre had.
Gmail & Email - Separate apps. Boo.
Wifi (Maybe) - Although the wifi indicator shows one bar, I have no problem with connecting or speed issues.

Sort of a half a** list, but there it is regardless.

so overall do you find the evo to be better than the pre?
