How important is build version on Verizon?

Got the Nexus 6 from Google play, and it updated to 5.1.1 build version LYM47D. According to the Google folks and Verizon build LYM47E is required for the Verizon network.

Since I'm not well versed in flashing software versions I figured I'd try skipping it, and just bullied Verizon into giving me a simcard without activating (which they said would be impossible using LYM47D). I took the card home, installed it, and called the customer support who activated the device over the phone no problem.

My question is this: would I benefit at all from getting the correct build version at this point? Could it possibly improve radio communication with network? Because as of now the "signal standby" is using the vast majority of my battery, and this device is getting WAY worse cell and LTE reception than my old droid razrmaxx

Any help would be very appreciated, thanks!

The great thing about Nexus devices is you can flash images direct from Google. You can do it either through fastboot, or there are tools (Windows only the last I knew) to help you flash them. Wugfresh toolkit is a good one.

To answer your question, i would flash at least the firmware version that Verizon recommends. You can see the list here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

Interesting because my Google play nexus 6 updated itself to LMY47Z before installing my vzw sim and its running perfectly.

Huh, when did u get yours? I've had mine for only 3days. Mind checking how much battery the radio signal standby is taking?

Thanks for the reply. I've almost zero experience with this sort of thing, only time I fiddled with it I turned my old droid 2 r2d2 into a brick for a week.

How easy is it to figure out? Do I need to install/unlock boot loader or something before I can flash images from that Google site?

Verizon should have new update soon I would wait. Att just pushed. Hopefully Verizon will be next

Word, good tip. So now that I'm activated on Verizon I should receive the next update with correct build automatically right?

OTA means over the air.

I don't know how but I got 5.1.1 pushed over the air on VZ sim like a month ago. I have been running build LMY47Z since then with not a single issue. I was running 5.1 LMY47D before that and also with not a single issue. I'm a VZ customer.

If you're not on 47E you won't get the ota from verizon.

Are they checking your system version somehow? Either way, I'll just flash it if it turns out to be a good build. Or just the bootloader and radio. May just go with M anyways.

On the google factory images page 5.1.1 is only for Sprint, USC and T-Mobile at the moment. I've been on 5.1 LMY47D with Verizon for awhile now, no issues.
