I tested it out as well and found the following items:
1. You don't get free M2M minutes when going through Google Voice. If you have your GV number in F&F and have caller ID off, then receiving the call doesn't use minutes, but making calls still will unless you use one of the call back apps.
2. There is a slightly longer voice delay when going through GV compared to directly. There is a slight delay directly with a direct Verizon to Verizon call, but when going going via GV the delay is double or tripple. My view is that if you can't hear both sides of the conversation like we could during the test, this won't be an issue.
3. Dialing through GV didn't take noticably longer to connect than dialing directly when letting the Android GV app handle the dialing.
