How is the Android Auto software updated?

Lots of people are reporting trouble with AA. Mine is one of the more common ones where AA won't recognize the phone, fall back to MirrorLink and then fail out. I thought it was the cable but I've used three different cables from three different manufacturers and it still happens occasionally.

But my question is mainly about how the software behind the dash gets updated to fix issues that new Android releases may create. My car is a 2016 VW GTI Autobahn, if it matters.

there are no updates to the host headunit, all AA actions and updates happen through the compatible phone through the AA app

Head unit updates must be installed by a dealer. Check with your dealer to see if there are any updates.

My understanding is that the software in the head unit is pretty simple and just does a "draw this here" and "report taps there". All the smarts are in the AA app on the phone.

It's possible that your dealer would have a firmware update, but unlikely unless there was a serious problem with the unit. Like the others said, the power is in the app on the phone.
