How long once Gingerbread is out before our Evo gets it?

I'm in the IF camp. I own an EVO, and do hope that HTC/Sprint will offer an update.

That said, I think a 2.3 update is somewhat iffy. HTC rarely offers multiple OS upgrades for its devices. Most current smartphones seem to see one update, along with a host of smaller maintenance releases. The EVO has already seen one major OS update from 2.1 to 2.2. Also, it will probably take HTC/Sprint several months to complete and test the update, which would likely push it's release into the Spring of next year, right around the time Sprint is gearing up for the next flagship handset. Since they are more interested in selling NEW handsets, they would be less likely to continue pushing OS updates out to older hardware.

To the idiot who proclaims it would be the death of Sprint, hardly. MOST customers who have the EVO, Hero, Optimus S, etc don't care and aren't sitting there with baited breath waiting for an OS update. They use the phone and if an update comes, great. They update the handset and continue using their phone.

As I said, I do hope the EVO is in line for an update, but I don't really EXPECT it to happen. If not, I'll finally root the thing and update to 2.3 that way. Then next Spring or Summer will upgrade to the next flagship handset running Android x.x.

There is no way Sprint is going to let the Evo just die out. Not gonna happen. The Evo is one of Sprints most important phones ever. Keep in mind that it was MONTHS after the Evo was even confirmed before it was even released. My guess the Evo Shift (if that's even their next big phone) will be out sometime late Sprint or Even summer. There's NO way Sprint is going to just let the Evo die out like that for all those months before their next big phone comes out. Also consider the Epic. The Epic STILL hasn't even gotten Froyo. Which means who knows when they'll even get Gingerbread. So I HIGHLY doubt Sprint is not going to have a Gingerbread device until late sprint early summer of next year. Just not gonna happen.

just improve the battery life and let us all use our phones as we should be able too and i'll be happy with 2.3.

That's supposedly one of the improvements on 2.3 :) Although I've never had a problem with battery life, and Froyo did help for me.

I think the question we should be asking is IF the EVO will even get Gingerbread. I would hope so, but you never know if HTC and Sprint decide not to update the EVO anymore. Time will tell and hopefully HTC and Sprint will release a statement that the EVO will get the update sooner or later.

Remeber HTC Sense is a thing of the past with 2.3 as google has said they will not allow custom UI in 2.3 and above. So I would say their is a big change for HTC and Samsung users who have SenseUI and TouchWiz. They will no longer be on our device, unless a custom rom maker cooks in into the custom rom. i for one think google is doing the right thing to ban custom interfaces as google android should have a common user experience. They are learning from Apple I-OS and what apple is doing right. Now i am not an Apple owner of anything. But by making the user experience the same it is much easier to learn a new device. Even Microsoft is doing it with Windows Phone 7 devices.

Google never said the custom UI's are not allowed with 2.3

The definition of open is that the OEM's can put the UI of their choice on there. Google will NEVER restrict OEM's on stuff like that, otherwise android wouldnt even be open really...

Just some advice to people. Updates don't always mean big and flashy stuff. I remember so many people complained about 2.2 and being disappointed because everything looked the same. In reality the differences between 2.1 and 2.2 were pretty significant. So when 2.3 comes to your EVO while I'm sure there will be visual differences, don't expect holograms to start popping out of your screen or your phone to look like it came out of the Minority Report.

HOLDONACOTTONPICKINGMINUTE!!! You mean to tell me 2.3 has no Hologram support?

Sometime in April. Regardless of when or if the official gingerbread release is pushed to the Evo, the homebrew community will develop a custom ROM with gingerbread (and hopefully include 4G support).

If gingerbread makes my battery last linger by decreasing processor impact than I want it now!

Altough I love Android I think that it is not offering much intuitiveness such as Windows7 and nothing near Webos..And before I get blasted here Webos has been the certified platinum OS out there in form of intuitiveness and something brand new..The fail was the horrendous hardware. Anyway I tired of the same old same old swipe left swipe right technology..I don't think google has much incentive to innovate because of the simplistic app launcher Iphone4...I just hope that the new Webos hardware is something great and under HP the marketing is also so that other OS developers can come with something close to Webos.

I think you're going to be waiting a long time for WebOS to come out on decent hardware. Not only that, but I'm not so sure that it's not already too late. At this point, it's not just an uphill battle, it's a sheer rock wall with no end in site.

Dude, have you even READ any of the rest of this thread? It's not going to take HTC/Sprint five months to get 2.3 ready. It took about two for 2.2.

I'd really like to know where people get their numbers from.

We have a good phone to pc video chat, yahoo messenger video app works great. I use it all the time...

OK, let me re-phrase: an Evo-to-pc video chat client that doesn't require my family and I to migrate en-masse to Yahoo :). We all have Google accounts, so I'm basically hoping for GChat video to be made available on the Evo.

This is actually one of the things I have always been confused on, Why hasn't this been done ever since 2.1 - Gtalk video chat works awesome - it makes ZERO sense to not have it in Android.

Skype has had the chance to jump on the video market for android but has not as of yet... Again WHY?! this is a place for skype to shine - Sure the linux client is very outdated and in need of a major overhaul.. but I digress

For now the Mrs. and I use qik but

Oh - and If the N1 is getting 2.3 - the EVO is getting 2.3 - I say Jan for a well rounded community version to emerge and Feb for HTC's relese

Really?

How many HTC Android devices have they made that have been around long enough to be able to have multiple updates?

Only the Nexus One.

How long has the G1 been around (Q4'08)? Backatcha, aside from the N1, how many HTC Android devices have had multiple official Android OS upgrades before the next hot device hits the market.

Much less, across all Android handset mfgs, how many have pushed multiple official OS updates to their devices?

Like it or not, that's the reality of the wireless handset biz.

Man gone a day and this thread has taken off!.
What's interesting is.. gingerbread isn't even out yet and they show off a demo of honeycomb? Makes me wonder if gingerbread really isn't much of an update?.

Never said the EVO was doing to die out, but it IS six months old. It's a great handset and Sprint will continue to sell it for as long as they can. Whether they sell it for another 3, 6, or 9 months does not necessarily mean it's going to get another official OS update.

Also never said that Sprint wouldn't have a Gingerbread device until Summer of next year. My guess is they will have something sometime in Q1. CES is around the corner, as well as the first Wireless trade shows.

As I said, I have an EVO and would like to see an update. Great if they do, no skin off my nose if they don't. It's still a great handset.
