How long once Gingerbread is out before our Evo gets it?

IMO it will be determined by how fast HTC and Sprint want to deliver it to the EVO. they made 2.2 Froyo a priority and they made a commitment to deliver it quickly - which they did - rather than dink around like some companies - so they have a pretty good track record so far. i think HTC and Sprint realize that the EVO is their flagship cash cow and they want to demonstrate that it is on the forefront of the latest technology. i think it also sends a great message to customers when they deliver fast updates. in the end do you want to be with a manufacturer and carrier that dinks around or one that gets you the latest updates fast? i know that i am right now very brand loyal to both HTC and Sprint because they deliver great service and value.

i think we'll be getting updates for a while. I have a buddy with a much older android phone and his is still getting updates. are they as quick as 1-2 months? not even close, but still getting updates at least.

I think you can expect to see the Evo and Galazy phones to be the first phones to get the update. htc and Samsung obviously already have the source code. The Evo was the first to come out with 2.2 by almost a month (not including the N1 of course) and I'm sure that's because htc already had a leg up against the other manufactures, remember they make the Nexus 1.. Since the Nexus S (massively disappointing btw) is basically the Epic minus the keyboard, or a Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate with a front facing camera (minus a SD card ) there's no reason to think it would take that much for the other Galaxy phones to get the update.

As I see it, Sprint pretty much must upgrade us to Gingerbread and must do it as fast as they can. We are all paying $10 extra a month for the EVO. Sprint claims it is not a 4G charge but rather a charge for "premium" phone. If Gingerbread is not made available to those of us on the EVO, we could easily make the claim that we no longer have a "premium" phone, especially if we live in a non 4G area.
So if they want my $10 a month, then I want Gingerbread

the Nexus S, has the same screen resolution, a 1ghz cpu, and same RAM. Essentially the same components so we will for sure be getting 2.3

It's not nearly the same. the processor and the gpu are much better on the nexus s. Don't get me wrong I love my EVO and it'll run gingerbread just fine but don't fool yourself into thinking that just cuz 2 processors run at the same speed mean that they perform equally well

I think it will be 1 to 2 months at least. Remember, Sprint has to add its crapware to it before release. I'm sure 2.3 has been finished for quite some time and Sprint has had it in some form tweaking it to their liking but taking their sweet ass time doing it. Also, I'm sure Google and the carriers have some sort of deal that .X and X.X updates have to be a specified amount of time between each other so the carriers can push newer phones to market. If they keep OTAing new updates to your current phone all the time, they see it as it will greatly diminish your lust for a new phone with new hardware/software losing money because you didn't upgrade.

this is a very good point. The majors will be sure to look out for the bottom line first and foremost. I do think us "root" people will be seeing versions pretty quick, Just like Froyo. I don't expect incredible UI changes with Gingerbread, but I do expect great functionality updates.

I think he/she meant nexus one and not Nexus S. That would make a whole lot more Sense.

I'm in the IF camp. I own an EVO, and do hope that HTC/Sprint will offer an update.

That said, I think a 2.3 update is somewhat iffy. HTC rarely offers multiple OS upgrades for its devices. Most current smartphones seem to see one update, along with a host of smaller maintenance releases. The EVO has already seen one major OS update from 2.1 to 2.2. Also, it will probably take HTC/Sprint several months to complete and test the update, which would likely push it's release into the Spring of next year, right around the time Sprint is gearing up for the next flagship handset. Since they are more interested in selling NEW handsets, they would be less likely to continue pushing OS updates out to older hardware.

To the idiot who proclaims it would be the death of Sprint, hardly. MOST customers who have the EVO, Hero, Optimus S, etc don't care and aren't sitting there with baited breath waiting for an OS update. They use the phone and if an update comes, great. They update the handset and continue using their phone.

As I said, I do hope the EVO is in line for an update, but I don't really EXPECT it to happen. If not, I'll finally root the thing and update to 2.3 that way. Then next Spring or Summer will upgrade to the next flagship handset running Android x.x.

Uh, I doubt it's going to take four months for Sprint/HTC to have Gingerbread ready for the Evo. As a previous poster stated, it only took about two months for us to get Froyo on the Evo. And you really think Sprint would suddenly stop supporting their number one phone before it's even a year old? Use some common sense man.

How many HTC Android devices have they made that have been around long enough to be able to have multiple updates?
