How many of you are coming from a Palm device ? ( WebOS/Pre/Pixi )

I am coming from a Pixi right now but its been a long road getting to this point since I bought the Pre last July. My first Pre was great until I had an issue with with it, like so many others have had. And after going through two refurbs with the terrible oreo effect I got fed up with it and decided to trade it for a Blackberry Tour. The tour was nice for awhile but the OS and Browser on those phones is so outdated that after a few months I was bored with it. So from there I decided to sell the Tour and buy a Pixi after playing with my friends. I've been pretty happy with the Pixi since then but it is a little slow and will freeze up on occasion. Not to mention I am sick of the tiny little screen on the thing. But I will definitely miss the keyboard on it. It is easily one of the best keyboards I have ever used on a phone - I don't know what it is but its just fun to type on. So now I'm getting the Epic and I'm going to really try to test it out as best I can during my 30 days to make sure it is the right phone for me because I really love webOS, I'm just not happy with the outdated hardware thats being offered on right now. I know I am going to love the Epic but in the back of my mind I am secretly hoping HPalm will announce an amazing phone with webOS 2.0 and specs that rival the Epic. If that were to happen within my 30 days I would probably return the Epic and wait till that phone is released. But at this point, I am tired of waiting for a phone that may or may not be better than current hardware and may or may not be coming to Sprint. So thats why I am going with the Epic, well that and the overall awesomeness of the phone.

I too am an original Pre owner. Software is great but the hardware is crap. I was fortunate enough to not have the hardware completely fall apart on me, just major cracks along the sides. I'm really fed up with HP/Palm and their secrecy. I will miss webOS but I'm also looking forward to getting my hands on the Epic!

Notifications are going to be the same more or less, which probably means you're going to be disappointed. You'll be waiting a while for another webOS device that isn't a printer or tablet. I couldn't wait, after 5 months of pre ownership, and 5 pre's I was happy to just do anything else, including a dumb phone if needed (or pay my ETF and leave). Fortunately, Sprint Customer Service replaced the 5th Pre with a Hero. Its not powerful, but it is built much, much better. The epic will be my second android device, and I know if I don't like Touchwiz, not to sweat it, cause there are plenty of other home replacements that work very well. If you were really into the patching (as you have to be to make a pre actually useful) then I would check out xda-developers.com. Plenty of great information on there. The community isn't as nice as A|C, but its way nicer than the P|C community.

I also like the touchstone, but even those aren't a great idea. I don't know about you, but I've woken up the next morning with a dead pre because the contact with the pre and touchstone weren't good enough to charge. I much prefer a hardwire dock, which will be available for the Epic for much cheaper than what a touchstone cost.

Well, I still have my original Pre, but have heard of the many problems others have had. If I went through 5 Pres like you, I'd be pretty unhappy too! I disagree with you on the Touchstone, its brilliant. My use of it has been flawless. One in my car, one in the house. I believe other manufacturers will be following this footprint in the near future.

Speaking of the future, there are rumblings afoot on the interwebs and in the Podcasts of a device running WebOS 2.0 called 'roadrunner' showing up in developers logs and that it may launch on verizon in October. It's all a huge grain of salt stuff, but the wait for Pre 2 may not be that far off. Regardless, I am still excited to get my hand on the Epic!

Also, I will check out Xda developers as you suggested, but my extensive experience with P/C and treocentral prior to that has been great.

im coming from my Sprint Palm Pre which ive had since July 09, i really dont want to leave, i like the OS its just that hardware is difficult to pass up. Although i really wanted the Evo (seeing as its sold out) i cant buy one right now. So the Epic is everything i want, the screen and the processor. Dont get me wrong i still love Palm and HP, and most likely i will end up buying the next Palm phone along with the Epic

Well, if you're interested in inductive charging, PowerMat was supposed to come out with inductive charging batteries that replace your current battery and you lay it down on their mat. The issues I see are that the batteries are generally smaller mAh than the stockers, meaning shorter battery life. May not be an issue if you buy a couple of mats and stick them where you spend a lot of time. It isn't magnetic either. The first touchstone I bought was also defective, much like my first Pre. Neither lasted 1 week. The touchstone kept going from charging/discharging/charging which was quite annoying. I have no faith in HPalm's QA.

I've heard of the roadrunner, but the damage is done for me. I won't even look twice at it. The best thing it has going for it is releasing on VZW, which means it will HAVE to go through rigorous testing before it will be granted a release date. Sprint obviously doesn't do as much testing on software or hardware.

powermat not the answer...yet

Yes, powermat only works inductively for blackberry, iphone, and nintendo DS now. For Samsung and other devices you have to use a universal adapter tip = same as plugging into wall. Check it out:
Powermat USA | Wireless charging mats and receivers for your iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry and other devices
I am sure they will catch up soon. But even so, as you said, its not magnetic. Nor does is it appear to be something that would be easily portable to car. Hopefully these solutions will come.

The demoed replaceable batteries not too long ago. Currently, you're correct, thats all they have to offer, but in the near future they are looking to release inductive charging batteries instead of cases.

I have a Pre. Not totally sure if I'm going to upgrade to the Epic or not.

Biggest thing holding me back: I operate my Pre one-handedly fairly frequently. Not sure the Epic will be one-handable or will even fit in my pocket.

Second-biggest: I'm not primary on my share plan, so it's going to be more money to upgrade. Factor in the $50 higher cost of the phone and the $10 4G fee, I'm starting to get cold feet.

We'll see.

you don't need to be primary, assuming the guy with the primary is willing to give you their upgrade.

I know. And she is not willing to give up her upgrade.

I have to say though, having just read the description of the Mode Switcher app, I'm not so sure I'm ready to give up my Pre.

Wow, just wow.

My wife and I will both be giving up our original Pre's and picking up the Epics. I've been trying to come to terms with going without the TS charger and a few other aspects of WebOS (I still think it's the best mobile OS on the street today), but the lack of new hardware (yes, Palm Pre 2 is rumored) and wanting something bigger are the 2 of the main reasons to pick up the Epics.

late,
Coz

Pre # 2 is going to die the true death on aug 31st. I'll keep it functional for a while, just as a backup, but I despise the device now. The volume rocker has a major hardware glitch now, the contact exporter is borked, and the phone won't keep a data connection for more than five minutes straight. I'm looking forward to swapping to a Droid, and if my epic doesn't come in, I'll go for a different droid, but a droid I will get on the last day of this month.

Palm Treo 800W

Leaving my beloved. but quirky Palm Treo 800W behind for a bigger screen, youtube, better social interaction and an audio jack that works. This was my first smart phone. I've had it almost two years.

6 days to go!

My lame little introduction for A|C , feel free not to read this part : Hello ! I am new to Andriod Central . I currently have the Palm Pre . I love the OS , but the hardware is crap . Complete crap . I doubt the next HPalm phone is gonna be the great , since i've read on the P|C forums that HP probably won't have that much affect on the next phone . Which is a bummer . I'm a tech nerd , and plan to root my phone and try and be an avid member of A|C . My Samsung Epic 4G is already pre-ordered . :]

The actual question : I've noticed that almost every person i've seen that is planning on getting this phone , is coming from a WebOS phone , or the Evo . I just wanted to know , what phones are you guys coming from ? & why ? Outdated hardware ? Want a 4G phone ? Broke your old phone ? Or you just wanna stay up with the latest Super Phone ? Either way , let me know what phone you guys are coming from , and why . I'm planning on tons of Palm phones . :P

1st post ever btw . :D

CURRENT COUNT:

29 From WebOS ( Pre or Pixi ) . ( Including me )
1 From T-Mobile G1 .
1 From HTC Hero .
1 from Palm Treo

OK let's add to this one: iPhone 3g s. Outdated hardware. ATT sucks. I've developed a hatred for Apple's mobile products and the way they handle their issues, I just want to get the heck out of here and go back to glorious Sprint (at least in my area; reception is the best by far)

Coming from Sprint Treo 800W

Palm/Handspring history:

HS Visor Deluxe-->HS Treo 600-->650-->700P-->755P-->800W--->EPIC!

coming from a Palm Pre and have the only preorder for the Epic4G at my RadioShack around the corner. Can not wait to have a phone that actually works and an OS I don't have to patch to make up for lack of features.

Sprint Pcs flip phone>some sort of flip phone>Instinct>iPhone 3G>iPhone 3G s>iPhone 3G s #2>HTC EVO 4g>iPhone 3G s #2> and the moment you've all been waiting for: Epic 4g!

In this last sentence you make is sound like webOS is Dead. Man if HP can't make webOS Shine in the phone market, either on their own hardware or licensing it out, then that will be one of the biggest losses EVER in the tech industry.

I guess if it survives in tablets, then that might suffice to help it make a comeback in the future.

Heck I kinda see whats happening with webOS and android as a pseudo parallel to Apple and Windows back in the day. Apple clearly had the better interface, but was all but lost in the shuffle and ran over by DOS/windows. Apple held on long enough to now have a good thriving business. Heck, I'm I PC guy and I'm liking windows 7, but I'd install OS X in a heartbeat if Apple would make it easier. It's kinda a shame we all had to put up with major gaffes like windows ME and junk like windows 3.11 (although it seemed cool at the time) when we could have been using a more polished Apple OS from the start had they had a better business plan.

So, maybe even if webOS' market share shrinks to next to nothing, I guess as long has HP keeps working on it, hopefully it will never DIE.

In my last sentence I wasn't trying to make it seem like Palm is Dead, I'm just tired of the company not coming out with new hardware for the Pre that can't seem to keep up with Apple and Android. Don't get it twisted, I very much like Palm and have been with Palm every since it's Palm Pilot days and Treo days. But when you have countless times of hardware issues with a phone that has an awesome OS system and their hardware is like flea market material, it gets old quickly. So like I said in my last sentence, it's time to move on to bigger and better things. Right now that is Android.
