Welcome. Also if you have any questions about the epic specifically, check out the stickied Q&A thread. If you have questions about android OS, let us know.
Andrew, how confident are you that Samsung will stray from their reputation of not supporting phones with software updates and bring the Epic it's much deserved Android OS 2.2 to get it up to speed with other phones out there (i.e. the EVO)? Do you think that the Epic will receive constant updates to keep in line with Android OS releases or will it get left in the dark? Just wanted to see what you thought about the subject...
Thanks for your support to us noobs!![]()
I have no clue... Fortunately, that really doesn't matter too much with popular devices. HTC did the EXACT same thing to the Hero. Less than a year old, no more updates. Doesn't matter though, cause the dev crowd with the Hero are awesome. Running Froyo on my Hero, plus Overclock and JIT and the thing flies... unfortnately the phone isn't very efficient at handling it and the battery dies very very fast. My Linpack score was over 5, Quadrant well ahead of a stock Droid (cause of I/O) and transitions were quick. However, just having 2.2 and normal clock speed and no JIT, transitions are nice and smooth as is. My Hero is tolerable now.
I suspect the same thing will happen with the Galaxy S line. It already is showing with the Vibrant and Captivate, but to tell you the truth, this phone is going to be much more popular than those. We should have root very shortly after launch. And when that happens, let the games begin! well, technically games start at launch, but yeah, you get my point.

I know your not asking me , but I thought I would stick my two cents in .I have some hope that they will continue with support for this phone . Why ? Because the Galaxy S Line is going to be on all 4 major carriers in the US . I doubt they would just let them die off too quick . I think the Epic will be the last to get updates from all the phones , that being because of all the hardware difference compared to it's sibling . ( IE. Keyboard , Flash , Front Facing Camera , etc etc . )
Basically, if Samsung doesn't support their FLAGSHIP phones, then they are screwed as mobile handset company.
So would you like me to add you to the count , as coming from the Pre ? I don't know if you already posted that you are coming from the Pre , and are contining the discussion , or if you need to be added .Yea , the slider was pretty much HORRIBLE . I hated having a tiny keyboard tho . I got used to it . But they didn't have a satisfying click . I also have been waiting for what seems like forever . This is the first phone that made me consider ditching my Pre . & I think I made the right decision .

My favorite part about the Pre is that you can't even type, but you literally just roll your fingers around. It looks kinda funny!
Yep . I've had bad experiences with Samsung phones in the past . But i've never used a Samsung Smartphone . My Grandmother has a little samsung slidey phone . Haha , it's a piece of crap , but she loves the HUGE font on it .Definitely don't mind the 2 cents...I most certainly hope that you're right though... this being a chief phone across 4 carriers should hopefully push it to the top of Samsung's current list of mobile priorities... I don't mind if the Epic will get it's updates (a little, hopefully) slower than the other 3 due to the hardware / software changes, but really hope that they come on a continuing regular basis...
Lmfao . I liked that about it when I first got the Pre , but then I got tired of it . My friends where amazed by the way I type . My fingers just stood in place . Haha , but for those of us with Fat Fingers , it made it kinda hard .Thank lord I have skinny long fingers . @_@ . Anyways , the funniest part of the whole thing , is everybody asked me if it was an app . Haha , to make it seem like I was typing when I wasnt .

My wife has the SGH-877 and it's god a couple problems. The unlock button sucks and so does the UI. that said, the lock button was noted in reviews before we bought it so it's not like we didn't know. No one has complained about the Epic Hardware so I think we are good there.
She'll be getting the Captivate when she is eligible for an upgrade next summer.
The UI was the worst during the Instinct era (besides TW 2.0). People have complained about the feel of the other Galaxy S phones, but you're right about the Epic. There have been no complaints of the hardware that I have seen.
