been on pre since day 1. love webos, but everything else about this phone is just outdated. got the epic with launcher pro, and the pinch to zoom (or double click on today icon) gives me the multitasking i wanted. now, as far as EVERYTHING else, i am just amazed now.

I am coming from pre, it is ok but the battery and constant lock ups have really pissed me off.
I took the plunge yesterday and upgraded from a Sprint Pre (was first in line at the store, which was surprising since I got there at 7:30 am for an 8 am open). So far it is taking a lot of time to get used to (no gestures, etc.). I am also seeing the battery drain wayyyyyy faster than on my pre, but I know enough to give it a few full discharge cycles before evaluating that. The phone itself is an absolute beast, even when weighed down by Android 2.1. With Froyo this thing will absolutely crush the Evo in performance and battery life IMHO. The one annoying thing I can't solve is that I cannot get my Macbook pro to mount the SD card in the Epic. I enabled debugging, selected Mass Storage mode and mounted the drive. I get an error saying that the drive is not readable. Everyone else who has had this problem says that debug mode solved it, not for me lol.

from palm pre here, im thinking about switching to verizon all together tho since i get some pretty bad signal issues while my dad's pixi plus almost always has min 3 bars (central jersey)
My Pre started having problems a few weeks ago. So I got an epic.
On my pre, it started with one spot, but turned into about 4 spots with the "phantom touch" problem. So my touchscreen thought it was being touched when it wasn't.

I came from a pre also. Between my woman's and my pres, we've gone through 8 of the things. I tried an evo for 30 days, but it didn't stick. I needed the physical keyboard.

upgraded for the reason that the apps i needed werent on the pre ex. orb, started giving me problems would lag freeze and biggest of all hardware just gave out cheap at its best.

I'm hearing more and more about the sd card mounting problem with the MacBook Pro's specifically. Does yours have an SD card slot in the meantime?
Coming from a Pre too. The sleep/wake button on my Pre (actually my 3rd Pre) broke after a year+, and rather than get yet another Pre I decided to check out some Android action.
There are plenty of things I miss about WebOS, but for the most part I'm liking the Epic a lot more.

I loved my Pre. WebOS is the best mobile operating system there is...if I could put WebOS on my beastly Epic/if WebOS had a better quantity of quality apps I would be in heaven.
good morning! coming from pre, love to mess with things. have already rooted the epic and am having a hard time waiting for things to do. developers please start to dish out the magic. magic is good.

The Pre homebrew community was awesome and offered a lot of very functional things for free. Mode Switcher being one of them. Also Music Player remix. I loved the lyrics feature.
The display on this Epic is phenominal and I love how the text wraps when zooming on a webpage. I also am a hardware keyboard fan girl, but must admit, the virtual keyboard (both landscape and portrait) are surprisingly easy to use.
Going to keep with this until at least next weekend to give it a fair shot and time to see if I can figure out how to do things.

I'm not coming from Pre. I owned WebOS phone from launched. Love its technology, hate its execution and the crappy hardware they introduced.
I had been on Android since day 1 - TMobile G1. I'm coming back to it. Someday, I would love to see Android to get WebOS feature. (They are so close.)

Dittos. FIrst handset. Phono jack is 'scratchy' and have a growing screen crack on the Pre. Just can't wait any longer for new hardware.
The multitasking is much better executed on the Pre and the consistency of the UI was better. If HP put out kick *** hardware and developer support holds, I would reconsider next time around.

I finally had enough of the Pre. That phone was so hyped, and I expected big things - only to be let down. Hard.
The sad reality was that I had to wait for a phone worth moving to. The EVO didn't appear to be it, but the Epic has totally been worth the wait. The screen is beautiful; the speed is much better; and, there are actual apps! I do miss swiping and cards, though - two features that were actually useful on the Pre. I do notice that it takes the Epic a long time to charge, and the battery does drain quickly (I have turned off 4G, Wi-fi and GPS unless I need them, and haptic feedback, which seems to help tremendously). So far, I love this phone and am not disappointed. I'm sure there are a million things it can do that i haven't figured out yet, but I will get there. One thing at a time!

I dont know about you but I saw maybe 2 commercials for the pre or pixi. That was one of the downfalls of webos was the poor marketing done by sprint and palm. I LOVE webos and being a long time palm user/loyalist I was upset that they werent advertising. Hopefully they will be getting their act together and HP will forces them to use their awesome ad campaign skills and get webOS on the right track. The dream of an epic like phone with webos makes me froth at the mouth, but I just dont see that coming anytime soon. It would be tough now to go back to webos and would only happen if they brought back the true palm features that android has at the hardware level of the epic. Honestly their pursuit of trying to compete soley with the iphone was a HUGE slap in the face to us loyalist palm users. So many of the features that we have come to rely upon were removed and or ruined. So it will take alot from palm to get me back on their side, but Im always willing. Until then I will be an android user and fan.

While the Web OS UI is 5 stars, the requirements on the hardware is overwhelming. Since this will never actually happen, we can only argue about it. But I think if we did put Web OS (1.5 latest version) on Epic 4G hardware, the phone will still lag.
I say this because while the Epic 4G hardware is head and shoulders above the Pre, I'm sure some of you that came from the Pre overclocked it to 1 Ghz. I know, 1 Ghz on the OMAP Pre processor is not the same as the 1 Ghz Hummingbird processor. But I really think it is also how Web OS is written. When I pull up the contacts app, it would run a few other things before running the app, and then there's so many other things in the background running that it lags just scrolling through the contacts.
My guess is unless Web OS is put on a hardware with a dual core processor (next gen hummingbird?), where a lot of the background functions are put on one core, while the foreground stuff is put on another core, the OS itself is always going to lag.

I would have agreed with you before this last weekend. But my view has changed. WebOS had a amazing amount of potential, but was sluggish, buggy, and frustrating on so many levels. Just the speed at which Android boots is a major upgrade bonus compared to WebOS.
I'm sad to move on, but think I've made the right choice.
