How Many Users Actually Use Custom ROM's?

I'm saying is yeah tons of people on this forum want and use custom ROMS on their devices along with other developer/nerd Android sites too.

But out of all Android phones (every single one) that are sold what is the percentage of people that actually jack with their phones with ROMS, Rooting, Overclocking etc...

I'm thinking it's a low percentage like 5% or something but I could be wrong I'm new to Android leaving BB in the dust forever.. But what are your thoughts.

Reason I says this is I bet Motorola knows and that's why they locked the X down considering they won't loose that much business by doing it.

I had a custom ROM for my Droid for a very long time but gave it up. its too much of a hastle and now my Droid seems to be pretty glitchy and kinda messed up. But that could bjust be my phone and the ROMS I put on it. Over clocking to 1 GHZ prolly wasn't a good idea either, but it was very nice

Only thing I would want to do is Root it so I can get free Tethering and Mobil Hot Spot on the random times I would use it.. Other than that I'm cool

not i. i agree with rinnr1, want to be able to root to get free teethering etc. but i could give a care less about the ability to install custom roms.

I used one on my Nexus until it went to froyo. One of the unforseen consequences to going that route on the N1 was that I lost the ability to receive OTA updates. I was notified, but when I went to update the phone, it would say verification failed.

After much digging, I found that it was because I overlayed the stock bootloader recovery program with amon ra's much recommended recovery tool. It took me a long time to find the stock updates that would work on the custom recovery (FRF50->FRF83->FRF85B->FRF91)

That soured my taste for custom roms a bit, then there's the need for them, at least for me. I find that froyo is giving me everything I need and I see little benefit to using cyanogenmod 6.0-RC1. Yeah I tried it, but its not providing enough for me to continue using it.

rooting is another question, as I use both titanium backup and setcpu so I'm more interested in rooting the phone.

I'm using a custom ROM on my Droid Eris, but honestly the phone is crippled right out of the gate so a custom ROM is imperative.

Those are the ONLY reasons I want to root the phone. No others.

Agreed. Root yes. I'm using a custom rom on my droid and I love it, but I think the dx will be fast enough and not need custom roms to beef it up.

I would like to be able to root but I don't think I'll be too concerned with custom ROMs on the X. I'm currently running BuglessBeast v.4 (Froyo) OC'd to 1GHz on my Droid though and it is very nice and very quick.

Like most others have stated, having root is a must for me so that I can use WiFi tethering for my iPad. As long as I have that, I am good. I played with custom ROMs on my Eris, which were kinda cool, but were not a must have. Besides most of the time, I had to give up some functionality (e.g. GPS, Bluetooth, MMS, WiFi) to use the ROM. After a while you start to miss a fully functioning phone.
