How much longer can we expect support for the Nexus 5?

I was wondering for how long in the future can we expect the Nexus 5 to receive software updates? Is it officially stated somewhere that the support for the N5 will end on a specific date?

I seriously consider purchasing a N5 even though a N6 may/may not come out soon because I'm on a budget (the N5 will naturally be cheaper than a potential N6) and because rumours suggest the N6 will be bigger in overall size (I prefer the phone isn't too big and 5" is already big enough!).

But I would like to get more than a year of software updates out of my new device. It's a Nexus after all. Any thoughts?

It will at least get another year of updates. By then it will be two years old, but it can easily get supported longer than that. The same way the Nexus 4 can easily handle Android L. We'll see soon enough if it will, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

I would expect it to get another year of updates, but there is no guarantee of this, Google may even decide to support it longer. Although historically I don't think Google have released updates for devices more than 2 years old.

However being a Nexus it is very well supported by ROM developers, so even when official support ends you'll still have a good selection of custom ROMs to choose from to run the latest version of Android.
