How Much Room Is Really Left on the 16gb version?

It really depends on how you use your device. If you play a lot of large games, then 9.9gb storage seems a real challenge.

In 2013 we shouldn't have to make sacrifices on our $650 phones should we. We are locked into 2-3 year contracts (3yr in Canada) and I expect my phone to actually last me 2yrs this time around.

That it would be, since just six of my EA and Gameloft games would tap out that 9gb on their own. I have no desire to juggle apps, so will hold on to my 32gb S3 until hopefully Verizon offers a 32gb S4.

Exactly! And the phone is 64GB capable. Its the carriers putting the limitations on us!! Hopefully special orders for 32GB phones will come into play if the carriers refuse to stock them locally. I'd jump on a 64GB S4 !!

Totally agree. 32 GB of memory vs 16 probably vocosrts Samsung am extra 5 to 10 bucks and removes a lot of headaches for the end user

It's not only games that take up a lot of space. Youtube preloading takes 1GB of internal memory, and the Play Music app cache can get ridiculously big as well.

Hopefully the 32GB versions will be out soon in the US.

Just finished an online chat with Verizon. When asked about the S4 32Gb model their wording is "at the time we are only offering the 16 GB model. We don't know whether other models will be offered in the future."

I am now more encouraged a 32GB will become a reality. Even if its only a special order deal.

On another note, I also checked on the Sprint site. IF you bring your number over to Sprint the S3 16GB is free and they offer the S3 32Gb for $149.

Sprint has very spotty coverage in Southern California still. Ugh. And Sprint is STILL losing money as a business. Not a good sign....

From what I have read Verizon is saying no 32GB. I suspect that will be the case given they pulled the S3 32GB and put it to online ordering.

The S3 32gb was pulled due to making room for other devices and positioning the S3 16gb as an entry level device for that product segment at $99 for two year contract. This is from a Verizon corporate account rep, unlike all the folks in certain media sites guessing.

The site that reported no 32gb has no source to back it up, so probably a Verizon customer service person speculating.

Not saying Verizon will not be stupid and not release a 32gb, but no official No yet.

I got the 16gb on Sat.
The apps are very small so with a 64GB SD card, there is plenty of room.
I don't use a ton of apps

How can you say apps are very small? Depends on the apps you use. Games as example and some social apps can be over 1gb or more each counting the data and cache needs.

Sd card has nothing to do with app storage.

I understand the SD card is only used for files.
I had a iPhone 3GS since it came out.
It only had 32GB of storage and I think I only filled it up 1/2 way - that includes pictures and music which will go on the SD card on this phone.
Off all the apps I already downloaded the biggest one is Facebook at 34.1 MB most of them are 1/2 that.
I don't play many games so I am not worried

I expect to have my future S4 for at least 2 years. I expect APPs to grow in size like everything else. Over those two years Android is bound to have several major upgrades which will undoubtedly increase in size further reducing internal memory storage space.

My SanDisk 64GB card is resting on the shelf right now.... waiting for The Next Big Thing.

the offline wikipedia app, which doesn't require internet access is 5gb

You have to root to run apps form an unreliable and slow SD card. Hardly an adequate solution. Minimum for this phone should be 32 MB.

That's plenty of room for Apps though. Just get a 32GB MicroSD card for $25 for storage space.

It depends on how you define smaller. First it is not generally true than Android apps are smaller than iOS apps and most of those that appear to be are actually doing calls to the jvm and other applications/os.

Android apps are atoll smaller than iOS apps but I can easily have 10-15GB of apps on my phone. I feel you shouldn't be forced to choose apps you can and cannot carry. The carriers like it because it forces you to use data and makes you run over on your data plans.

I really doubt most users will be happy with 9 GB. This is just Samsung being cheap just like the reason they use cheap plastic for their cases.

I'm sure you realize just how atypical you are, at least with respect to the general smartphone populace. For the vast bulk of people, the 9GB left over is plenty.
