How often do you use mobile payments?

I never use it. However that's because I use an iPhone and we don't have mobile pay. Even when I had a Google phone I still used my debit and credit card.

Correct, sort of. You need to use your fingerprint, which DOES unlock the screen.

Nope you don't need the fingerprint unless your purchase is over the normal contactless limit of £30 (that's in the UK, not sure what the limit is in Dollars or other currencies)

Hmm, I've always used the fingerprint, regardless of amount. In fact - I'll unlock my phone with my fingerprint, attempt a payment and get prompted AGAIN for my fingerprint.

I wonder if Android Pay is able to modify the usage rules to suit the demands of individual banks/cards?

Huh ? ha
Actually started with Google Wallet.I think Google Wallet started in 2011
I remember when Apple didn't have Apple Pay.
The old Google Wallet transformed into what is now Android Pay.
The new Google Wallet has different features

I think you are technically correct, but I also think it would be fair to say that as to point-of-sale payments, that really did not take off until Apple Pay came along (October 20, 2014, according to Wikipedia).

When I use my bank debit card , step up to the card terminal, finger on FPS, after its accepted. I have to enter a PIN. I found that can vary depending on the establishment your at/or whom the card is with. Example Wells Fargo or Bank of America, etc.
I have a second card on my Android Pay that's issued from Chase which does not ever require to enter a PIN . Just step up to the card terminal ,put finger on FPS , gets accepted, and your done.

Yeah , it did pick up after Apple started using it :)

But part of the reason,, for the reason Google Wallet was not popular was because with the phone" out of the box stock" the only carrier that allowed Google Wallet to fully function was Sprint.
Vzw/ Att blocked it,so Google Wallet didn't show for those people in the play store

So back then if on Vzw or Att, I think you had to be rooted/unlocked boot loader,, with a modified version of Google Wallet app installed for it to fully function as intended.
I am sure alot of people wasn't aware of that,, or didn't care to do that.

I tried this for a purchase of less than $8 today, could not get the terminal to see my phone until I unlocked it. I then did have to re-auth and scan again for some reason, the terminal said "card read error".

I've used Android Pay several times, mostly at Walgreens. I've also used it at a local grocery store. It's convenient. I also reload my Dunkin Donuts card using Android Pay.

Probably timing issue with when the terminal is ready vs when and how you hold the phone by the reader. Some readers I've learned you hold a little longer. Definitely learned wait until you know terminal is ready for the receipt

Ah, I hadn't thought of that!

I'll have to try it the next time I am in the grocery store.

Okay, I just tried this at my grocery store (a Stop & Shop, if it matters to anyone).

Not turning the phone on didn't work at all. Opening the phone (Pixel XL) with the fingerprint sensor and then holding it to the terminal did, in fact, work. So, correct, no need to open the Android Pay app at all.

If faced with an issue and seems like the card terminal isn't getting the info from your phone 95% chance it is clerk error for them not hitting the button they have to hit to activate the card terminal.
The main place that happens to me is at grocery store.

I had that happen to me several times, holding phone to card terminal with nothing happens.
I mention to clerk "Did You hit the button" ?
Their reply is usually "Sorry, I forgot,, now its ready ".
Then it works. Ha

Edit :
For me I have actually never tapped my phone against the card terminal.Just hold phone above the card terminal, with finger on FPS .
But whatever works best for you,its all good .
I have the Pixel phone
