How strong is gorilla glass 5

I got an OtterBox clear case and when installing it had to press REALLY hard to get it to pop in. Could that damage the phone?

Yes. Gorilla Glass is scratch-proof, not break-proof. The harder the glass is, the more prone to breakage it is. (Soft plastic doesn't break, but you can scratch it with a fingernail.)

You won't break it by putting a case on it.

They obviously are strong enough to withstand an attack by 5 gorillas, 4 gorillas it's a champ, but 5 is to much.

Since, at least so far to date, all tempered glass regardless of if it’s GG1 or GG5 all scratch at a mohs level 6 (actually at about 5.5) , so I’m not sure I would call it “more scratch resistance”.

Also remember that “sand” (which contains a lot of quartz) is harder than tempered glass (Gorilla Glass 5 or any of them) and will scratch the screen.
