Kies says my device is supported through SmartSwitch, but I want to backup my phone, not switch it to another. Is there a possible way to fix this problem? If not, what's the best backup/restore app?

Sorry about that.

It's not that I will not use Kies, but Kies won't connect my device because it's supported through SmartSwitch, but I don't want to switch phones. I'll look at Helium. Thanks.

Im having the same issue, Kies 2.6 told me the device was not recognisable and i would need kies 3.

Kies 3 just pops up a message saying i can use SmartSwitch to change data between devices, but does not pick up the S6...

Helium isnt really an option unless you have cloud based storage, because Samsung decided to lower their intelligence to Apple's iSheep level and removed the SD card slot.

For all the people wantiing to back up. Smart Switch got the capabilities of Kies and now is also a back-up tool from S6 onwards.

I believe that there is a PC and Mac version. It also has to be loaded on the GS6? My wife's GS4 was just updated to Lollipop. Would she also use Smart Switch as well?

Rohan,

Kies does not work. It's documented here, and we tried it ourselves and wrote about it here.

Can you clarify what data you wish to back-up? Video, pictures, music, calendar, contacts, text messages, etc? Smart Switch is a transfer of data from a previous phone to Galaxy S6. If you are looking for a PC backup, you will need a third-party utility. Depending on what data you want to back up, I can recommend a utility.

There's now smart switch for pc or mac. You can get it on the Samsung website. I just got it yesterday since Kies is no longer an option.

GWall13,

Does Smart Switch allow you to back up to PC? Will it backup contacts/calendar to Office Outlook on the PC?

Good to know. Gonna download Smart Switch on my laptop and phone. Lost an excel file and one contact was missing when I set up my GS6. I have set photos to be automatically sync he'd as well.

Not sure it will be able to back them up straight to Outlook, however it will back up all vital info, like contacts, application data, memos, documents, home screen, pretty much anything you designate. When you open the application on your computer, click on preferences and it will have checks on every item you want to backup.

If you try to use Kies to backup an S6 phone, the device will tell you to use Smart Switch. So it's not a matter of people not wanting to use Kies ... but that Samsung is requesting the switch. It's not clear what Switch can do from an ongoing sync perspective. All reports talk about using Switch to transfer data from old to new phone, but not ongoing sync. I found one little item on a UK site, but there was no other info.

Here's a screenshot.

There is a thread about this around here, look for Samsung Smart Switch for PC.

I saw that link you posted, is there another software other than smart switch that does a full backup?

To backup apps and their data you can use Helium, but there are some apps that are not allowing to be backed up, maybe other similar apps from the Play Store, but for a full backup similar to a Nandroid Backup done with custom Recovery you can try the information on this thread I posted some time ago and nobody had paid attention to it. I have my full backup already and I'm planning to do it at least once a month to keep a recent backup at hand.

For backing up apps and their data I recommend TitaniumBackup. I got the pro version. Got it to keep settings on external memory card and backup user settings for applications. Now when I backup for example navigation app and restore it after system reinstall I get my licence and fav. places back.
