how to block a update???

One gotcha. After rebooting I am getting Google app FCs repeatedly. And app market doesn't work. Renamed the non OTA file from the above instructions and I'm fixed. Not sure where this leaves me for OTA updates. Thought this info might be helpful. Cheers.

Turn your phone off fully. Once it is off press 'volume down + power' hold it down until you boot to a white screen. This is what is called the hboot. Wait about 10-20 seconds for it to do an sd card check, it's looking for update files. Once it completes the check scroll down with 'volume down' and select 'recovery' with your power button. You will now be in clockwork recovery mod.

Simple you use the 'move' command to move and rename files in linux which Android is made from. So the proper command would be mv /dir/filename /dir/changedname

mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/BAKotacerts.zip
mv /system/etc/security/cacerts.bks /system/etc/security/BAKcacerts.bks

And that should fix you up!

i did this and got stuck in my first boot loop D:

Same here. Went back in and changed it back and now able to reboot. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I enter clockwork recovery, mount system partition (high light mount and press the track pad button, switches to unmount), enter the commands and type in exit I loose my cmd prompt. I reboot the phone and get stuck in boot loop. Thanks

Try typing exit in the command window. Then close it if it's still open. Then unmount. Then reboot using the reboot item in recovery. I don't know for sure but it could be that the order of close and unmount may matter. Worth a try.

this is the exact order i did it in. hmm i wonder why it doesnt work?

I have changed the otacert.zip (mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/BAKotacerts.zip) with out any booting issues. I'll have to wait and see if that blocks any update. After a lot of reading and some help from other forums it appears that cacerts.bks is an important part of the os and needs to be left in place.

adb while in recovery, with partition mounted r/w (help me out DInc hackers with those commands)

cd system/etc/security
mv otacerts.zip BAKotacerts.zip
mv cacerts.bks BAKcacerts.bks
exit
exit
reboot

mv command = cut/paste. First argument is existing file name and path, second is new file name and path. Since we're in the folder where the files are, we don;t have to specify the full path (/system/etc/security/otacerts.zip for example)

As mentioned above, have to do it in recovery since partition is read only while Android is running.

Edit:
And Qazme shows why it's important to refresh a web page before you answer a question lol.

Hate to nitpick but mv = move.

Basically format is:
mv source destination
In this case you are moving the source file of /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip to /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip.bak.

I was able to successfully rename the files through r/w in root explorer, but I am still getting the latest update pushed? Any ideas?

I used root explorer to rename the files.

After renaming I kept getting the force close problem every so often which I am assuming is when the update kept trying to nag me to install it.

So I had an Idea maybe if I reloaded the rom, and renamed the files before the phone had a chance to learn about the update, perhaps it wouldn't start with the nag window and therefore not cauise the fc.

I don't know if that worked or not because I couldn't insteall market apps once I renamed the files. Market kept force closing. So I just renamed them back.

i used root explorer to change the names of the two files in question . system--data--security folder. after force close issues i changed just the name of the ota file . however that didnt work either. it fixed the force close issue . but the update still comes to the phone . i have read for hours and hours on how to regain root after the upgrade gets installed and how to stop the update from coming . looks like the only thing that comes up is to load some recovery file on the sd card , and then install the superuser app , then i should be ''good to go'' only thing is i dont know what recovery file that person was talking about . can someone shed some light on this for me? namely ....
What recovery file , and how to i get it installed to work . i do understand how to reboot in recovery and install zips that way . but if some one would be gracious enough to explain to me step by step , i would greatly appreciate it . This is my wifes phone , i rooted it using unrevoked forever , and have installed uncommon sense .

I used adb to rename.. then I started getting all sorts of FCs, all the while being asked if I wanted to update.

So, I've returned the files to the original name and just keep ignoring the update.

Any ideas?

I had the same issue. Got to the point where it wouldn't allow me to make calls or use any Google services.

All this is depreciated now. HTC has changed their OTA methods. Like most things about Android, it stops working after a month or so because everything's different :p

I'm going to close and unsticky this one, hopefully we can figure out a new method.
