Any other way to do this without root?
 
You seem to want to change the display shape to something not matching the screen shape.
(As opposed to just making things bigger, for example 1343x2880.)

What is your goal here?
 
Even if you could easily change the aspect ratio from 1440 x 3088 to be 1440 x 2880, you probably would not like the results. Changing just the height but not also the width accordingly will make everything on the display to appear distorted -- in your example the width remains as is but the height is scaled down resulting in everything appearing to be narrow and squished. You would instead need to alter both the width and the height by the same factor in order to maintain the same aspect ratio.

But that aside, you might want to focus instead on just changing the resolution of your display (as opposed to the hardware-dependent aspect ratio). For non-rooted devices, there are already options in both the Settings menu and if you choose to enable it, the Developer options menu:
