How to clean the display without turning it off?

Is there an easy way to clean the display without turning the phone off?

Polishing the display of a touch-screen device causes utter mayhem if it is still active...

Just put the phone in sleep mode (press the lock button)

You'll be able to clean it then and the phone will still be switched on.
