How to completely reinstall my Android?

I have a Samsung Galaxy tablet that my brother was using for a while. He tried to root it, but something didn't quite work, and he just left it that way. Now I got the tablet back, it's slow as hell, keeps disconnecting from the wifi, apps keep freezing for no reason etc.
When I try to update the android on it (there's been several updates since), it says updating is not possible because it's a modified device. I'm guessing this is because of the rooting attempt. However, when I try to use apps like Titanium backup, they don't work and say the device is not rooted. So apparently it's both rooted and not rooted at the same time - Schrödinger's tablet!!!
We tried rooting it again but just kept getting error messages. When we try to unroot, same thing. I lost all my patience and just want to reinstall the whole thing completely. How do I go about doing that? I wanted to do a factory reset, but I read that it wouldn't remove the root. What do you guys suggest I do? Thanks a lot in advance!
