Hello everyone I'm kinda new to the Android scene, but am pretty good with cpus and learn really quick. Anyways, essentially what I want to know is if there's a way to connect the Evo to my home network, as one would do with a laptop let's say, and then be able to transfer files from my pc to the Evo and do this all from the phone? I know that there are "cloud" apps for the Evo and "cloud" software for the pc...but I don't want to do it by uploading my files to a server and then downloading them through the phone. I want to be able to do it the same way I transfer files between my pc and laptop, through my home network using the router. So if anyone can help me out with this I would really appreciate it.

What youre asking for is to connect the phone to your laptop via ftp or some other means. Essentially you need to make your computer a server. This sounds like its outside your tech savvy.

So actually, try using an app called dropbox. Easiest way to do it.

What I'm asking is how can the phone be connected to the same network as my pc and share files to and from each other, the same way one would be able to do when u have two computers on the same network... And I want to be able to do this from the phone; cause there are apps like Websharing File Media Sync and Android WiFi Manager that do what I'm talking about, but the transferring can only be done from the pc not the phone. And don't worry about my tech savvy, I'll be able to keep up if someone wants to tell me how to do this, or knows of any apps that can do this. And dropbox is just another cloud app, that's not what I was asking...

Yes.

There are a number of FTP clients for Android. That will allow you to get files to/from your phone using your phone.

All you need to do is install a little FTP server (or enable one if already built into a NAS you might already be using) and share the drives/directories that you want to allow your phone to access.

If you open a port in your router to your FTP server you could even access the content on your LAN via the Internet when away from home.

Let me know if you want more details.

I don't know about accessing network files on the PHONE, but I use a program called WebSharing transfer files wirelessly to/from my PC. If you are connected on the same WiFi network, the app opens up a port that you can then access from any browser on your PC. Just go to the web address and then you can upload or download any files to/from your phone.

If you think this will work for you ...

I'm definitely interested in this and would love more details. This would be a lot better then using one of those "cloud" apps and software.

But I still would like to see if anyone can answer my original question, just cause I want to know if its possible...is it possible to connect the Evo to my home network and share files with a pc just like one would do with two computers on the same network? Like is it possible to do it without any software...the same way its done from one computer to the other on the same network... Or can it only be done through an FTP server and client?

Yea I mentioned this app above, its a good app but you can only access the files from the pc...I would want to be able to do all the transferring of files from the phone, not only the pc.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something any of the already mentioned app will work, I wanted to mention Google Docs.

Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk.

I actually found a couple apps that do what I need, ES File Explorer and File Expert. These apps let me browse my pc on my home network and download/upload files, all from my phone. I'm still interested in the FTP client route, cause it might be faster as far as transferring certain files...and also I can connect to my computer when I'm away from my house with the FTP client. So I would still want the details to how I can set up the FTP client for my Evo. Thanks for everyone's help.

Connecting to your home network is not the same as connecting to a server on your home network from outside your network.

Seriously, dropbox will do all that you're asking for. I don't understand your aversion here.

Use Orb 2.0 as an alternative.

If you want to access your server at home, the bigger question is not setting up the phone.
- First, setup the FTP server.
- Setup access routing to the FTP server to outside the network. Do this via routing, or DMZ, etc. If you have a dynamic IP from your ISP, you'll need either a way to use dynamic DNS or track whenever it changes from your ISP.
- Once that's all done, it's trivial to simply search the market and find an FTP client. An android FTP client works the same that as any FTP client, enter addres, creds, and you're done.

When I say 'connect to my home network' I'm referring to the way one would set up two or more computers in ur home to the same network and share files back and forth...so what I was originally asking was if u can do that with the Evo acting like one of those pc in ur home, u get it? And I understand that connect to a server on my home network is different from that...but when it was brought up by the other user, it was something I was interested in, in addition to my original issue. And then that's when I found those other two apps I mentioned in my last post, which do what I want without me having to upload anything anywhere first as u would have to do with dropbox. I appreciate ur help on setting up the ftp server, I'm going go get working on that and let u guys know how it goes.
