I was being a nice guy and helping another member create a nandroid backup of his current system, and thought since I took the time to type it out in a PM I would share it here for others that may not know how to do it. I know a lot of us can do this in our sleep, but remember we were all new once.

If you are rooting/unlocking/flashing you NEED to make backups. Sometimes things go wrong. Sometimes you don't follow instructions properly. Sometimes your wife is giving you dirty looks for messing with your phone again and you rush things. If you have a nandroid backup and you can get to recovery, you can almost always save yourself pretty painlessly.

This was tested using twrp on CleanROM 2.4. You can use whatever method you wish to get into recovery.

1. Hold down power button until Power Options menu appears

2. Select Restart

3. Select Recovery

4. Press OK (Phone should boot into twrp recovery)

5. Use volume key to navigate to "nandroid menu"

6. Press power button to select
At this point Backup Partition should be highlighted

7. Press power button to select

8. Use the volume keys to navigate to each entry you want to back up*
While highlighted press power button to place an "x" next to each entry that you wish to backup.

(I usually backup everything each time, I find it easier and safer to restore everything in one piece that I know works, more knowledgeable users may be comfortable with mixing and matching)

twrp has the great option to compress your back ups. This option will take some more time to create, but it takes up 50 - 60% less space. If you are flashing a lot of ROMs and keep back ups, this will save a ton of space.

9. After you have selected everything that you wish to backup, navigate to Backup Naowz

10. Press power button

11. Go find something to kill some time. This is going to take a while...

*From what I understand if you lose your wimax keys they are gone forever. Back them up!

Optional
Make a copy of your backup and place it on your personal computer. If something ever happens to your SD card you have a backup.

It is better to have a backup and never need it, than to need a backup and not have it.

Re: [HOW-TO] Create a nandroid backup in twrp

So you need/want to restore a nandroid back up.
There can be several reasons why this might be desired:
You borked a flash...
You tried a new ROM, it sucked, you want to make everything like it used to be in the good old days...
You have no clue what you did, but now you have a $500 boot loop machine

**See Post #1 on how to access Recovery**

1. Use volume keys to navigate to "nandroid menu". Press power button

2. Navigate to "Restore Partions" Press Power

3. Navigate to your backup file. Example: 091420111158 Want to take a guess as to when I made this backup? 09/14/2011 at 11:58am. Press Power button

4. Check each box for the partions that you wish to restore. As stated in Post #1, I restore every everything. More advanced users may have reasons/needs to restore specific partitions, if you are using this guide, you are not an advanced user!

5. Navigate to "Restore Naowz" Press power button

6. Watch the magic happen

7. Reboot system

8. Enjoy your backup

Nice job newboyx. this would have been helpful to me when I migrated over to android and rooted my 3D. My first backup was trial and error. :) Look forward to your "Restore" method as I have not needed to do a restore as of yet - hopefully not anytime soon!

Good stuff! In the process as we speak...once its completed, does it save a file onto the SD card and I can just copy/paste onto my PC harddrive for backup of my backup? LOL.

Yes. You can find the files in the TWRP/Backups/HT*** folder on your SD care, where *** is a long set of letters and numbers that I presume will be different for every phone.

However... I think it's best to copy the ENTIRE SD card to your PC since the Backups folder will not include whatever else is on the SD card (music, pictures, downloads, etc.)

Great two step tutorial for doing backups/restores. Thanks for taking the time to put them together.

What does a nandroid actually backup?

I am using Amon Ra 2.3

There are options to add recovery, sd-ext, wimax etc.

Does it back up Amon Ra if I select recovery?

Does it back up radios?

Does it back up HBoots?
