how to delete notifications

Hello, I decided to trade in my iPhone 11 and get the pixel 5.
So far, I am happy with my decision.
When you pull down the notifications list, how do you delete them?

I can't find any setting

You can swipe them away, on the lock screen as well. There is also a clear all option at the bottom of the notification tray.

If you have lot of notifications swipe all the way down then swipe up and should see clear all at the bottom

You should be able to swipe it away , what notification is it that you mentioned earlier showed a gear icon ?

Could it be the gear icon that appears on the right when you pull down the notification shade? (on the left is the little pencil icon). This wouldn't be an actual notification. It is just part of the notification area.

Certain system notifications can't be swiped away. What does the notification say that you're having problems with?

not sure which notifications, have not received any more. I did notice on gmail that I can archive or reply, but not mark as read

Yeah, I don't think the user could ever mark an email as read from the notification. Personally, I'm glad that I can't, because I like to dismiss notifications to clear up that clutter but not forget about that email when I open the app.

For me, if I get a gmail message I can either swipe it away to the right on lock screen or in the notification shade.
What happens if you swipe to the right on a gmail message?

I just sent myself an email to Gmail and was able to just swipe the notification off to the side.

I have changed some setting in the Gmail app.

If I recall correctly, one kind of system notification you can't swipe away is the one that informs you that an app checked your location.

So you're saying the notification of an actual email in your inbox can't be swiped away completely? Just to be sure -- you're swiping it all the way to the edge of the screen, right? With any notification, you can swipe partway to reveal the gear.

Not sure what might have helped that but I have default action as delete. I have swipe actions off but I'm not sure how that would change notification actions.

I get the gear if I don't swipe all the way but if I swipe all the way the notification just disappears.
