How to easily get a voice assistant on the Google Maps app?

How to easily get a voice assistant to read me the directions in real time on the Google Maps app?
Is it in some setting somewhere?
I'm coming from an old iphone 4s and apple maps had a straightforward voice setting including choice of american vs british vs australian accent.

Google maps by default speaks the directions to you once you start navigating with it. Maybe I'm not understanding what it is you're asking for?
