How to fix unplayable avi videos?

Please forgive if this is the wrong forum.
Some avi video files will not play on N 7 (12). Does any one know what the requirements are? A link perhaps? There are plenty of windows video converters that allow most any parameter to be tweaked so it should be easy enough to get them compatible.
