How to force OTA update (or maybe turn off block OTA updates)

I rooted my phone when I bought it in August and somehow which I know long remember turned off auto updates.

I just unrooted and returned the phone to stock so I can get the Jellybean update. I'll then root the phone with Jellybean and turnoff auto updates (I remember reading an OTA update can break root or brick a rooted phone)

Anyway, now that I am at stock I am wondering how to get the Jellybean update... If I go to about device - software update - check new I get a service unavailable error.

It says:
Check for system updates under settings > About device when service is available.

This is what I am doing.

I am thinking whatI did 6 months about to block OTA updates with Titainium is still in place even though I restored back to a stock unrooted factory image.

Titanium Backup > Go to backup/restore > Scroll down to SDM 1.0 and freeze it.

Now that I am unrooted Titanium does not work so I can't unfreeze sdm 1.0

Anyone have any idea how I can turn off the block OTA feature, or if that is not the problem, is there someway I can get the phone to update?

It's related to the Google Framework Services app in the All Apps list under services. You have to stop it, clear cache, and reboot or something to that effect. If you search the forum for 4.2.1, you'll see the exact sequence. Don't do anything yet though. I'm coming back with a link as I have one of the thread marked as a favorite.

Trying again. I keep posting it and it gets posted in the original thread instead of this one. In case it does it again, the thread is called "For all those of you that haven't gotten 4.2.2 yet" and it's probably at the top of the recent threads list since I keep posting in it accidentally.

Here it is:

Ok, 4.2.2 came out last week and I still hadn't got it.
Not the end of the world, but seeing as I know others have got it (in the same area, without even having a SIM in) then I wanted to make sure it would actually work.

All the searching I did resulted in advice about going into recovery and manually installing it.

However, I found there's a much easier method.

Firstly - you need to be on Wifi. It's wifi only until the 19th Feb.
I wasn't so I got around this my making my work phone a hotspot. Just borrow somebody elses mobile data :P

Anyway, you can force it to do the OTA update by simply going to Settings, Apps, All Apps, Google Framework Services.
Hit Force Stop. Then Hit Clear Data.

This will remove the previous data about updates.

Got to Settings, About Phone, System Updates. Hit Check Now.

It'll now actually see the update and download.

Hope this helps.
Oh great. It worked. But, anyway, don't know if you have to do the wifi part, but other threads about 4.2 and 4.2.2 for those rooted exist. I'll find the last one and hopefully have better luck sharing it. Hope this one is somewhat useful though.

Ok, I stopped Google Framework Services and cleared the cache and tried the to update in about and get the same error. It seemed like that would be too easy with my luck.

I bet SDM 1.0 that I froze with Titanium is still frozen, so I will need to root the phone, run Titanium and unfreeze it, then unroot the phone back to stock, then run the update download... Ugh.. I delayed going to Jellybean because I didn't want to spend a day messing with my phone and it looks like it will go into two days.

Before I reroot and unroot again, anyone have any suggestions?.... Maybe it will auto update tonight, but I doubt it.

Ok. Rooted my device and see that SDM 1.0 was not frozen so I have no idea why I could not get updated to Jellybean.

I am now looking at CleanROM 6 R2 I think that is the latest stock JB version with some of the Verizon stuff stripped out.

I'd give it a try but I can't seem to do a backup in recovery.

In rom manager I select backup, it takes me to recovery mode but I only have the following choices:

Reboot system now
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache

When I messed with ROMs on my old HTC phone I had options like create Nandroid backup, restore back up

But I don't have any of those options on my SG3.

I have rom manager and clockword mod recovery installed.

I don't want to test roms until I am sure I have a good backup.

Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Talking to myself here. Anyway, I found a video on how to install clockworkmod recovery. Apparently it was not installed correctly even though rom manager said it was detected. I guess when I unrooted and restored from stock I lost clockworkmod backup.

I think I am ready to try cleanrom install.

TWRP can do a full backup that you can restore and it restores everything, including the layout of apps on your home screens. I actually had to use it at one point, and it works great. Currently have a backup of stock 4.1.2, and also rooted with cleanROM 6 r2 that I took when I was happy with how cleanROM was setup and working. Good to have both of those to restore to if things go wrong.

I suspect that CWM has the same functionality, but I haven't used that.

Hope that you've gotten your phone back where you want it to be.
