How to get access to my account info on the OnePlus One Forums?

Hey everyone!

I was so desperate to get an OnePlus One that I broke one of my cardinal rules, and went on eBay to purchase an invite :) The dude who sold me the invite was in Russia, which gave me a bit of pause since I had horror stories of east European hacker rings running through my head, but I didn't note his location until after I'd won the auction.

He was great, gave me the email address and password he used for the OnePlus One account within an hour of my payment (via PayPal). I made my order and got the phone within 48 hours, which is crazy-super-fast.

The last time I told him I wanted to update my account and therefore wanted to change the email to mine, he told me that I didn't need to do it. Now this is about a week after and I wanted to update my account on the OnePlus One Forums and the login info he gave me no longer works. I'm starting to get a bit worried that those horror stories might come true after all!

Other than reaching out to him again via eBay, what can I do to get access to my account on the OnePlus One Forums again? Or am I just gonna be forced to create a new account there, and update my profile with my information and somehow tie my phone to them?

Thanks.

To claim an invite I had to create an account because I was given a sharable invite. There are sharable invites, and invites to purchase sent to people who win OnePlus contests, or its their turn in line, etc. Sounds like he gave you a invite to purchase meaning it came from OnePlus for the account he created, for him to purchase, meaning not sharable except for how he did it, giving account info like the password and username to someone else. Think you have to create a new account, because as far as OnePlus is concerned the phone that was bought with that invite is linked to that account. I was sent a sharable invite, created an account, and my info like serial number etc, are linked to my account. I suppose it doesn't really matter unless you need to open a ticket or return the phone for replacement, something like that, even then they might understand the situation, they want their phones in people's hands, probably don't care how as long as it's not stolen. But I bet they didn't imagine the absolute greed humans possess to sell free invites. Pretty sad imo when I hear about people selling them. We all need to make $, but that's exploitation.

Well, to be fair, he said that he couldn't take advantage of purchasing the phone since he was living in Russia. He figured if he couldn't get one, at least he'd give the chance for someone else to get one. That's pretty nice. And it's not as if he made tons of money from the eBay auction. I ended up paying ~ $45-50 for invite. It was a premium I was willing to pay for the chance to get a OnePlus One ASAP.

So, dizzle, are you saying that I might as well just go to the OnePlus site, create an account there from scratch, and my phone's serial #, billing/shipping address, etc. to it, as if I'd got the thing straight from them instead of via my Russian friend?

I agree with that. The invitation I received, all I did was log into my OPO forums account to claim it. So I'm still tied to my own OPO account. What is strange about this is I think it's the same situation where the person who gave it to me, it was their own invite, not a sharable invite. Hm.

Either that our try to open a ticket. Ask if you can have them register that phone to your new account.

If by "they don't support buying phones through someone else's account" you mean that they won't send you a phone -- well, since I have the phone in my hands right now, I don't think that is so :)

The Russian dude won an invite and sold it to me; he gave me the email/password combo (it was a Gmail account) to enable me to access the invite on the OPO site; I made my order and paid for it via PayPal; and got the phone straight from OPO in two days. As far as I can tell my PayPal account, etc. is fine -- and as a precaution immediately after the phone arrived, I changed my PayPal password. Monetarily I don't think I've suffered any loss. So perhaps the only thing I am missing out on is the ability to get and share an invite, and maybe I won't be able to get any OPO customer service? If so, the lesson is: next time, wait to win a free invite like everybody else...

If he gave you that email account you'll get the invites to share. Basically you just stepped into his place. I don't think that's a problem - it must have happened a lot.

Did you even click on the link??? I didn't say they won't send you the phone, I said OnePlus "doesn't support buying phones through someone else's account". You seem to be good on your own so that's good. Below is a copy of their stance on the issue:

"Lately, we have seen a troubling trend that users are sharing account details in order to use an invite. This can lead to scams for both the one who sends the details, and the one who uses the details.

The original user of the account is able to reclaim their account, change the order and send the phone to a different address."

The shared details can also be used to steal personal information and commit scams against other forum users.
