How to install more apps

This is probably an easy question to answer for experienced Android users, but I've googled the heck out of this and can't find anything. I keep running out of space to install apps and I'm getting storage space warnings. After deleting some not-so-necessary apps, I got my "Device memory" up to 271MB, but I know I'll use that up in no time again. Is there a way to use the other storage that the phone has to install apps? I have 8.78GB free under "USB storage" but Android wants to save that for music and movies only, apparently.

Certain applications can be stored on your SD memory card. To do this go into Settings>Applications>Manage Applications> then select an application> if the application is able to be stored on the SD card, there will be an option called 'Move to SD Card'

Hope this helps,

Well no, there is no SD card. The Samsung Galaxy S II has 16GB of storage (before formatting and OS installation) but it is limiting me to only use 2 GB for apps and app data. iOS and WP7, by default, can use ALL storage space any way the user wants, and I'm hoping Android has a way to do this as well.

To my knowledge, there is not. The best suggestion I have is to get an SD card and do the steps above.

I highly doubt you have hundreds of applications that you actually use and require more space for.

If so then get something else, no one is forcing you to use Android.

Is there any other computing OS that doesn't allow programs to be stored on its internal storage?

I also have an iPhone 4 and an HTC Titan. I want all three major platforms so I can compare and use each to its fullest extent. I really do think it's beyond ridiculous that the "open" and "customizable" Android has this pointless limitation.

What about with rooting or a custom ROM?

If you can afford 3 mobiles you can pay the small amount needed for a memory card. Mine was literally a pound per gigabyte at ?16 from Amazon marketplace.
