[How To][Links] Themes, ROMs, Kernels, Boot Animations: 9-16-11

i would think there would be some incompatibilities between the two but try asking the theme owners first before you flash them.

I was on IRC for a while last night and there was some discussion that the themes that are currently available 'may' work 'partially'..

If you take the plunge please report back.

I am sorry for any disrespect I may have shown you by creating the EC10 thread. I did not mean it that way and I know how dedicated you are to this page and this community. This page and its maintenance is outstanding and I have great respect for you and what you do. I know it took you an immense amoumt of time to make this thread. Please forgive me for the alleged disrespect and for the problems I have caused over the last few days.

It is all good from my perspective. No perception of disrespect taken here and I hold no resentments.

I know that Landshark, Sheepdog Elite, Gunnermike53, DriodXcon, and ragnarokx have tried to keep the number of threads down so we don't have similar or identical topics opening up in lots of locations. It becomes hard to manage answering everyone's questions...

Thanks man!

Try: Super Manager - free from the market. It will copy and paste like Root Explorer.. it just comes with lots of extras that will take some getting used to (task killer, memory agent.. etc.). I ran this for a month or more.. it works.

I can also tell you that Root Explorer is fast small and efficient - no extra-extras.

Thank you. And when you say you must enable R/W and must set up the r/w capabilities to copy and paste, how do you do that?

For everyone who is running the times_infinity ComaVolt NONVOODOO kernel. I posted in his thread over at XDA last night and he is now aware of the problem of his nonvoodoo kernel reverting users back to stock blue recovery. He is looking at it and will work on a solution. Hopefully soon because I'm using is voodoo kernel and it is rock star material. Why it's so rock star I'm naming it the Charlie Sheen kernel.
Anyway, for those of you who want to continue to use this kernel and are not on a mac, you will need to flash the new cwm-all from GizmoDroid and jt1134 every time you want to use cwm.
For mac users, the only solution I can think of since you don't have ODIN would be to put the most recent update.zip on the base of our sd card, which should take you to red cwm-froyo, then from there choose install zip from sd card, then install the new cwm-all zip file from GizmoDroid and jt1134. Perhaps DroidXcon or Jaekar99 can chime in as to whether this would be the workaround for now. They are the real experts.

I have been running the ComaVolt nonvoodooo since release. You are correct in needing to either re-flash the most recent CWM in Odin or flash the (CWM for custom kernels) in the same flash session... If you flash the older version of CWM in the same session the CWM kernel overwrites the custom kernel and you get frustrated because you cannot get any of the supposed benefit.

I have opted to use Odin after the kernel flash.

I would agree that you could copy the older cwm-froyo update.zip (2.5.1.x) - with the bitmap errors over to your sdcard and use it as a gateway to flash the newer versions... I do have a link to that update.zip..

Thanks for the update. I also dropped a line in his thread also but did not get a response..

So I have been using his kernel but i odined the new CWM right after so than what ur saying is that I prob dont have his kernel running than? How can you check?

Odin the new CWM will not overwrite the kernel..
Flashing the older version of CWM in in the same session (Example: Flash kernel - then select zip - flashing CWM-recovery-ALL.zip (old version) will overwrite the kernel)..

You are fine.

Edit: Sorry for the confusion. I wanted to get the word out that the older versions of CWM will complicate the installation of custom kernels and to be aware of the possible outcomes if you have not updated CWM.

There were many reports of people experiencing issues with ComaVolt nonvoodoo kernels (battery life horrible) - this may be the case if they were reflashing the older CWM after the kernel flash.

You still have his kernel. Flashing the new cwm-all from GizmoDroid and jt1134 does not overwrite the kernel.

You can if the new theme has more and deeper theming. Good way to do a quick check is to check the file size of each. More MB would kind of tell me that theme has more and deeper theming. Nitro's themes have a ton of theming in them, so if Nitro's has more theming, some remnants of Nitro's theme will still linger around. This is all covered in the first few posts of this thread, check them out.

EDIT- My bad, I thought Jaekar updated his OP with this info. You should always wipe cache and dalvik cache when going from one theme to another. If you see remnants of the previous theme you will need to boot back to cwm, wipe cache & dalvik, flash base ROM, reboot, boot back to recovery, wipe cache & dalvik, flash new theme, reboot.

I will have it updated today... ;)

Re: Bootanimation

So for you who are dabbling with bootanimation...I've got this problem.

I have a non flash bootanimation that I manually inserted through root explorer from my sd card to my system\media root extension.

After doing this, nothing happened.

I've been looking through a lot of different forums and I can't find anything to get this to work.

Can anyone help?

Whoops, nevermind. I found this thread through search, and didn't notice you guys were epic 4g, i'm running a samsung fascinate =(

I've seen you post about Fascinate boot animations in the Epic 4G forum as well as the Galaxy S 4G forum. It would be best to post in the forum specific to your own device. I'm moving your post to the proper thread in that forum - you should be able to find the info you need at the beginning of the thread or by asking for assistance there.

may be a stupid question but i think im going to switch my kernel to comavolt, i don't need touchwiz on my phone do i? and to install just flash through cwm. and flashing a superclean rom will just overwrite the new kernel right?

You do not need TouchWhiz on the phone you are running 2.9.2 and it is TouchWhiz based..

I noticed that you are running voodoo just make sure that you are flashing the ComaVolt voodoo kernel.

Flashing through CWM will get you there. And yes if you re-flash the SC 2.9.2v ROM you will overwrite the kernel.
