[How To][Links] Themes, ROMs, Kernels, Boot Animations: 9-16-11

When flashing a rom like 292 it completely "builds a new system" so in effect your prior system/media folder is replaced with the one inside the rom, hence no need for renaming or deleting bootanimation. I'm pretty sure honeycomb animation is built in the rom.

It is.. It will install in the correct folder and will overwrite any existing bootanimation.zip file..

I did remove it. It's different becuase I did a boot animation that required to be flashed. Removing the bootanimation.zip and flashing 2.9.2 did not work. I'm still seeing the boot animation that I flashed.

Sent from my SC'd 2.9.2 PB & J voodoo'd Fascinate

I feel like flashing 292 just to see whats up. I got my setup really modded with sound events and stuff so I would rather not start over.

Jae...can you figure this one out?

I'm trying to replace the Boot Animation - BIOS (Flash in Recovery) that I flashed a couple days ago. I reflashed 2.9.2 and it still came up. The sc honeycomb boot animation is in the syster/media folder. But the BIOS still shows up on boots. I cant get it to play the sc honeycomb.

Ok how would you know the honeycomb animation is in there? The file is named bootanimation.zip regardless of what shows when booting. Is the reason you know its there because its another name?

That explains a couple of things.. That boot animation installs in a different location on the phone Look in the: data/local folder

Go into that location and delete the bootanimation.zip file that is located there...

Given you already have the bootanimation.zip file in the system/media folder you will be good.

Thanks Jaekar once I deleted that file in data/local it rebooted on sc honeycomb.

See, told you he was the expert. Thanks Jae. Way to go.

Holy @#$

Jae you are the man....I put a boot file in data/local...booted up with that file
Then removed it and went back to the one in system/media

I always thought the system always called on system/media when looking for the bootanimation.zip

Learned valuable knowledge

Thanks

One of those little bits of info that Samsung does not share with many... I only figured it out after pulling bootanis apart and put them back together again..

The kernel will look for certain files in certain locations, in a prioritized order; upon boot.. data/local, then system/media...

It will also look for bootani.qmg (stock boot) first then it will look for bootanimation.zip second.. If your phone is set up with a kernel to look for this.... Now if you have both on your phone (in the same directory) - your phone will not know what to play first.. and will play them both at the same time.. overlapping boots.

If you have neither and the phone expects it you will get the 'Android' logo in landscape on your screed during boot...

Tasty bit for the day..

OK Jae,

Thought I would try deleting the bootanimation.zip in system/media and sure enough got an android logo in landscape.

Here is the kicker, as you know I keep a PowerOn.wav in my system/etc folder just in case some kernel activates it. Well with no bootanimation.zip in media folder.....the sound played on bootup with the landscape android logo..

Can you test it to confirm? And how to get it working with the bootanimation.zip in the media folder.

Test confirmed.. It will play the PowerOn.wav upon boot with no bootanimation.zip in either folder..

I tried the bootani in both folders - no dice. Could not get the PowerOn to play.. with the bootanimation.. I wonder if one could get a copy of the bootani.qmg and put it in the system/media and get the boot sound with the animation..

I am needing to put my phone on the charger..

I been dying to get boot sound working....had all kinds of cool sounds on eclair.

When I had imnuts first kernel and you lose root, the sound did work as you know on xda when I asked imnuts about it.

He musta changed SOMETHING in there to cause it not to work.

Got any ideas to get it to work?
btw im on imnuts 3/30

edit: ahh it must be something in the kernel file that is waaay over my head to look around in. So its a matter of settling for a bleh type landscape bootanimation with sound or a cool portrait animation with no sound lolol

Unless you got the gumption to look around in a kernel file?

I am no where near 'kernel engineering" material.. imnuts indicates that he has changed nothing.. I'm on ComaVolt 4/3 voodoo and have exactly the same results...

Kernels are just not up my alley.. (yet).. Gonna poke around, maybe pick up something on irc.

Thanks for your idea and your help.. good to have ya on board!

wow i just googled bootani.qmp and the second choice in the results sent me right here to this thread....You are famous lol

The only problem is - in my haste to type I made an error it should be bootani.qmg...
