How to lock the screen instantly?

Hi, I just switched from Nokia to the mighty Android. Can anybody teach me how to lock the screen instantly? (On Nokia I usually press two buttons.). No need to custom my lock screen. I just don't want to wait for 3 minutes for the phone to lock itself. Is there any way to do it without installing any extra app? My phone is inspire 4G. Thanks a lot.

Dunno about your particular phone, but I typically just tap the power button.

Press the power button (don't hold, just press and release). Screen should turn off and be locked. Pressing the power button again should then show you the lock screen.

Unless the manufacture changed things around; that is how it should work.

BTW, one thing I want to mention. I set the security setting "lock phone after" to "immediately". Otherwise, if I turn off the power and turn it back on instantly, the screen is still not locked. But once I set the phone to lock immediately, after I power off and on, I get into the screen asking me to input the unlock pattern which is what I want.
