How to manually upgrade to Android 2.1

Awesome

Obviously this is my first post on here and I just wanna use it to say that this is awesome. Works like a charm. Thank you.

So once I download this file and run it, is this identical to what would be running if I waited for the OTA? In other words, is there any risk that I wouldn't get future updates? Or that in event of problem, VZW would say I voided my warranty?

I'd love to install this. I just cant tell if I'm installing the official release, or something more like V1 and V2 that others are now 'stuck' with.

We are trying to do the manual update on my Wife's Eris but we can't get the file to download. It gets to about 93% then stops and says "Unsuccessful". How exactly are files downloaded on the Eris? Is it pulling it to a "temp" location in the phones internal memory before dumping it to the SD card? Her free internal memory is only 66mb but her SD card is pretty much empty.

I even put the file in my Google Docs thinking it might be the source timing out but even when she downloads from there it hits about 93% and stops.

I really really want this update. I am just concerned that the site hosting the file has some sort of certificate error. If I could get this site from a google.com or an htc.com or even better verizon.com site with no certificate error then I would be all over this. As it is, I am just going to wait.

Updated as described, all works well. One question, where is the voice-to-text as described? "New support for voice-to-text entry." It appears to be the same as it was in 1.5, am I doing something wrong?

Voice to Text is not on the OTA release. It was also not on the 3 version leaks of 2.1 so it really wasn't expected. BUT, Verizon did post on their update PDF that it was going to be there....

DL'ed and installed smoothly, didn't even lose my apps or old texts or anything. Soooo happy with this!

OK, looks like it is working for me now - I had to rename the OTA update file referenced at the top of this thread "update.zip" and put it on the root of my SD card, then:

1. Hold down Volume Down and Power to boot into FASTBOOT screen
2. Select RECOVERY and press the power button
3. Phone reboots to screen with an exclamation point
4. Press Home and Power to access the recovery menu
5. scroll down with trackball to highlight "Apply sdcard:update.zip," press trackball to select
6. Let it do what it wants to do (about ten minutes of deleting files and installing files)
7. press trackball to reboot.

BOOYAH! Boots (eventually) to OTA 2.1. The reboot sat at the Verizon screen for so long that I thought it had crashed, so I pulled the battery and restarted. On the reboot everything loaded and life is wonderful...

Not working for me.

At step #5, it lets me select update.zip off the SD card, but when it tries to start the update process, it immediately says that it has aborted the process and update.zip can't be found.

Ideas?

I downloaded the file. Changed its name to update.zip, and then moved it from the computer to the root of the SD card. Then I followed the instructions from above.

Update from Leaked version

So if we have one of the leaked versions of 2.1 installed, does changing the file name to update.zip still not work for installing the OTA release? I keep getting an aborted message when I try

So far, I don't think anyone has found a way to update to the OTA file from a previously leaked 2.1.

If it's the same as leak 3 which is what has been posted all over, then those that have previous leaks should install the 3rd leak and others do the ota. We will all end up the same. Though those running 1.5 still have the root option as well.

Been running the manual upgrade since last nite. Lost my phone contacts, but another user mentioned WaveSecure, and I already had that, so I got my contacts back. Also got the Weather widget error sorted out, other than that, so far, I like it!

I just got a job last week running a route, so the Turn by Turn directions ROCK!

i wanted to know whats better: to wait for the "real" update or manually do it? i just cant wait to get it but i would rather wait if i loose anything by manually doing it

It is not possible to upgrade any version of 2.1 leaks..... yet. People are trying though... supposedly Verizon says it will be possible... probably via a special download and not via over the air means.
