How to performance tune Android

I initially posted this on the EVO forum, but realized that this is a general android question:

Sometimes, the drag down of the notification bar will pause midway, and other random non-responsive things.

Are there any system maintenance tweaks I can do? (On a windows pc, I'd defrag, delete temp files, etc.).

Are there cache files that should be purged, or other tasks to speed things along?

Not sure, your processor could be under a heavy load and that's what causes the problem. I have an app called SeePU installed and it shows your CPU load and how much memory you have available. Its not a fix but its nice to see when my phone is doing something that takes all its attention.
