How to reinstall an Android operating system?

Hi, I am new to this forum. So, if my question has been answered already I apologize, but I did not find an answer yet here.

Since a few days I have a new Samsung GalaxyTab S6 Lite (2024) SM P620; this my first tablet and I am also new to Android. My question is theoretical - at the moment (who never knows):

I was told to reinstall an Android operating system I would need a special software, Odin, and a separate PC that contains the necessary data obtained previously from the healthy Android system. I.e., if my Android system would need a reinstall, I would connect my damaged Android to the said PC via Odin and start reinstallation, yet with risks.

Question: is this true?

I cannot believe it, because my experiences with MS Windows and Linux are quite different: just insert the installation USB Stick*** into my notebook and I could reinstall the respective operating system system.

Thanks, androcubc

P.S. ***. I could easily create an MS Windows Installation USB stick following MS forum instructions, and with Linux (Ubuntu and Debian) you keep your installation stick anyway.

Welcome to AC!
You will need Odin and Frija firmware tools which u can download off XDA forums to flash the stock firmware or if your device doesn't get OTA updates but for most users you shouldn't have to.

Welcome.

Technically, Android is not like Windows or Linux. So, yeah, the process is different.

And it's different for different devices. Some Android devices need a separate piece of software, like Samsung's Odin. Then, you have to download the firmware (also known as the OS) for that particular device. Some devices use a self-installing autoloader which includes the OS that you run from a PC command line and it sends what it needs to a connected device.

It just depends.

Generally, it's not something to worry about. If anything goes really wrong, a factory reset is the first thing to try. It puts the OS in "out of box" condition, ready to be set up again. Installing the OS is really when even that doesn't work, or if you need an update that isn't somehow getting to you normally.

But, should anything happen, you can always ask here. @mustang7757 is real good at talking people through the process.

Thank you :) That is reassuring. I will familiarize myslef with the ruler of Germanic androids, just in case.

I hope I will never have to resort to Odin; I read it could be dangerous because the trickster Loki might take over a broken Android sytem ;)

Cheers, androcubc
