How to remove a theme

Is there a way to remove a theme? Or do you have to flash an unthemed rom to get rid of a theme? Can I just flash a new theme over the top of an old one?

You can flash a theme over a theme but you could end up with some parts not getting over written. Depends on the theme designer.

Some themes had a revert to stock DL but this is rare any more. Only other way is to flash the rom again or do a nandroid prior to the theme.

I prefer a nice few minute nandroid prior to theme. Then I go back to that nandroid then another theme...saves on clutter getting left.....

You're saying just keep an unthemed nandroid laying around? Then you can tinker with themes and just load it back up? So my nandroid restores tend to take about 10-15 minutes to load, is that normal? I'll be the first to admit I have more apps than apple banned last year so I would imagine that could cause it right?

Well, yes and no. I like to nandroid backup before anything I do to change the framework to be safe. I would rather nandroid the ROM and always install the theme fresh. That is just me, kinda picky I know, but I have avoided common errors this way. I know the time is tedious, but it is small in comparison to what could happen I think.

I follow the same method for the same reason. So you're not crazy in my book.

i like everything themed. some themes dont theme the menu items, just the settings. so if i find a theme that has a good desktop look with colors and status bar and such but doesnt theme the phone settings menu, i will flash a theme that has the settings menu themed and then flash the other theme on top of that so every thing is themed.

Backups made in Clockwork Mod Recovery (CWM) are referred to as that. You can do many other things in CWM so it is a very useful tool to have flashed on your phone.

First, you'll need Odin. It's a program you run on your PC for flashing certain files (.tar/.md5) on your phone.

Next, you'll need the CWM file that gets flashed with Odin.

And finally, you'll need the update.zip file that CWM Recovery lives in. Put that on the base directory of your SD card (just copy/paste from your PC)

Once you have all 3 of these downloaded, and the update.zip file copied to your SD card, you can flash CWM with Odin. These steps also apply to flashing other files such as off air updates, modems, etc. First, you need to launch Odin and power your phone off and remove the battery. Next, while holding the volume down button on the side of the phone, plug in your USB cable from your PC. You should see a yellow triangle appear on the phone's screen and the word "Download" as well as a yellow com box in Odin. Now, using the PDA button in Odin (NEVER use Phone) navigate to the CWM.md5 file on your PC and select it. Then, just hit Start in Odin and sit back for a moment. Once it's done Odin will say "Pass" in the box above the yellow com one, and your phone will go blank. You can then unplug the USB, reinsert your battery, and power back up. To get to recovery mode on your phone (you can try this right away) power your phone on by holding the volume up + down + power keys until you see the Samsung logo on the screen. This will take you to the phones recovery mode (blue). To navigate, use the volume rockers to go up and down, and the home button to select. You want to choose apply update.zip to get to CWM Recovery (green). Navigation works the same here but you select with the power button instead of the home (home just makes the screen go black, hit it again to bring it back). To backup, go to backup and restore, choose backup, and confirm. It will take a few minutes as it copies everything to a folder on your SD card (mine is usually about 300-400MB). To restore a previous backup, go to the same place, select restore, and select the backup folder you want to restore from. As I previously said, CWM is used for many other things such as installing .zip files of kernels, boot animations, ROMs, fixes, etc. so it's highly recommended for root users. Enjoy!
