How to return to stock, update, then root again

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That finally worked! I now am rooted, or at least I should be because I can see the SuperUser icon in my apps now.

Geesh, I spent entirely too much time on this today and I haven't even restored my apps or tweaked my settings yet! What should have been simple went wrong somehow. But I think I am good now. Thanks again to everyone who helped!
