I hope this becomes a sticky. So why is there a need for this? There are some threads to describe the following issues which I, through various sites and threads, have not found answered. I also have the same issues and was unable to use android market as a result. They include:

- can't download market apps
- getting "server error" when trying to get into android market
- tried the youtube "my channel" trick
- tried the google talk login trick
- can't update to stock 1.1.0 from 1.0.1 no matter what you try. the "sideload_update.zip" just won't take!
- pre-rooted 1.1.0 doesn't help me

What is offered in the current threads are:

- Restore to Stock 1.0.1
- Root via Auto-Nooter 2.12.25
- load pre-rooted 1.1.0

Which then leads to the above issues and I've not seen a resolve for a good subset of users across different sites. So if this is YOU, here's the fix I found:

summary version is:

- restore to Stock 1.0.1 via ROM
- restore again to Stock 1.0.1 via B&N Factory reset (which actually works)
- Update to 1.1.0 (which will now work w/sideload file)
- Root 1.1.0 via Auto-Nooter 3.0

Step 1: Reload stock 1.0.1 ROM
Follow the first 8 steps noted in this thread: Restore to Stock 1.0.1 Not Rooted

Once the ROM is finished installing, manually eject your SD Card, go back a menu on clockwork recovery by pushing PWR button and select "reboot".

Once loaded, register your device.

Step 2: Restore to Stock using B&N Factory Restore
Why is this step important? Isn't it redundant? No.
I have found the "step 1" ROM unhelpful in that the file is not the same as actually restoring it via B&N hard reset. Seems like there are some things missing or some bugs which has caused me and perhaps others multiple issues because we build off this file (root, flash pre-root 1.1.0). AND, the 8x power off thing is really tough which I wasn't able to ever do.

To restore to factory - power off. Then hold "power + N (upside down N)" for 6-7 seconds. If it powers off you did it wrong. Try again. When you let go, it should still be on the welcome screen. Let go and then it will go to a screen that reads "installation fail." Power down and do the same again. This time, it will ask you to restore to factory. Hit "N" twice and it will start clearing and restore to factory!

Step 3: Load "sideload_update.zip" to update to 1.1.0
Now the file will actually take! Go to B&N 1.1.0 Update file and download the B&N file. You can save it or rename it to "sideload_update.zip" noticing the lower case and the subtracting of "1-1".

With your NC on, plug your usb cable into your PC. Copy the zip file to the main directory of the NC. Once this is done, unplug the usb cable, and put the NC on sleep (tap power button).

The file should take in 2-3 minutes or less. You should see an installation screen that comes on by itself. Once this is done, you will be officially updated to 1.1.0! congrats!

Step 4: Using auto-nooter 3.0, Root 1.1.0
Go here: Rooting Nook Color 1.1.0 and scroll down to "READ TO ROOT / HOW TO DO IT." Follow the guide up to where it reads (on the guide, not the NC) "congratulations - your nook is rooted."

Step 5: Login to Google via youtube / market
The initial sign-in seems like it never takes but you can try it. there's no harm. Ultimately you can just hit "skip step", check the two boxes telling you to send data/location to google, and then try to login via youtube. I got a network error 401 when logging into youtube via "my channel" but I was able to access android market and download apps. I downloaded "Launcher Pro" first (some people say it helped them to do that) and then whatever other apps I needed.

ENJOY!

Credit goes to all the contributors to the already current stickies on rooting nook color, restoring to stock, etc. I have not done anything except to pull some things together and provide a very important step is restoring to factory which provides a working base file to build off of.

If this has helped you, please let me (us) know. It seems there are others who have had this issue without any resolve.

Finally picked up a NC tonight, and this is the first thing I was looking for. Thanks for all the info!

And sticky'd for sure.

BRAVO!!!! I wish I had this a couple days ago when I bricked my NC! I ended up returning it to BB for a shiny new one. Got to love the BB Silver Rewards return policy!!

Nice work!

STICKY THIS POST!!!

i haven't been able to use the read-in-store feature of the NC while @ B&N. Has anyone else had this problem?

Great write up OP. I'm sure I'll be needing it eventually.

Welcome to the cool kids club. :D ... It's an amazing little device for tinkering. I'm currently preoccupied with CM7 and my Evo, but as soon as Honeycomb AOSP comes out I'll be back to tinkering with my NC.

I want to see someone get the stock ROM on an SDCard. That way we can boot stock with the card inserted and take the card out to boot custom.

Maybe I've missed it, but I just haven't seen anyone actually get that ROM onto the SDCards yet.

I think this was the intention of the sticky thread "Restore to Rooted Stock" which, in the easy step, is actually an unrooted Stock. I thought this was STOCK ROM, but it didn't work out for me which is why I created this thread. It seems the "power on + N" gets people to STOCK ROM.

I don't know why people suggest the 8x boot interrupt vs. power + N. This was the way B&N tech support told me to load restore.

Thanks for this write-up! I'm just now in the process of following it step by step since I had various problems when going the B&N 1.0.1 > autonooter > pre-rooted 1.1.0 route. Then when I went back to stock, sideloaded B&N 1.1.0, and used the updated autonooter 3.0, ended up unable to get into clockwork. So want to try to wipe-wipe-wipe the slate clean approach, which makes sense.

Just for clarity's sake, though, it seems (particularly for noobs) something missing after following the "8 steps" from your Step 1. Since I had just done that the day before, I recall doing (after the restore to stock completes), which would be after those "8 steps" just before your Step 2:

**Wait for it to finish. When CWR is finished installing the zip file ... go to mounts and storage

**Select unmount sdcard >>> remove sdcard

**Go back to the main menu in Clockwork and 'Reboot'

I saw this listed here as their steps 4-6:
(HOW TO) Uninstall Clockwork Recovery and revert to a stock image

That's true. After step 8 (from that thread), a person does need to wait for it to finish installing, pull out the SD Card (you don't need to select a command, you can just pop it out), go back (PWR button), and reboot.

then go to step 2. will add it. thanks!

Noob here. Thank you for this thread. I wasn't going to do anything with mine until I could find a way to restore to the NC stock.

After a unsuccessful 'root', I tried to 'unroot' and do factory reset.

Now my NookColor only boots to a screen which says:
nookcolor
by Barnes & Noble

After a while, the screen turns black then the same 'nookcolor by Barnes & Noble' screen appears again. It repeats endlessly.

How can I restore my NookColor to factory ROM?

I have a week-old NC with a 1.1.0 ROM. I've rooted with autonooter 3.0.
However, I may have a defective nook - the touch screen is very flaky. Sometimes it takes me several attempts (more than several, actually) just to unlock the nook from the lock screen.
Other items take several taps of the screen to work, also.
I think I'm going to take it back for a replacement.
What's my best bet to get rid of all traces of having rooted it?
Can I just do the "power on +n" as suggested above?
What about the "Erase & Deregister Device" under Settings/Device info?
Would that do the same thing?

Thanks!

Just a follow up to my last post.
I was succesful in un-rooting.

I followed instructions here:
(How To) Flash Back to Clean Stock ROM using Stock Nook Color Recovery

And there's also a youtube video of the whole process (though in a different order) here:
YouTube - How to Unroot a Nook Color

Lancelot - maybe it's a difference in firmware versions but the power+n did nothing for me. I had to follow the 8 interrupts and erase settings from the device menu.

Guys, did you follow these instructions for installing CM7 - http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:... ?

I just tried it and run into a problem. After finishing of installation and rebooting Nook shows a message that installation failed and prompts me to try to turn it off and then start again. When I do it, Nook starts to load, shows small "ANDROID" text and freezes.
I tried it with both 8 GB ClockWork and with 1 GB ClockWork, it doesn't make any difference.
Before going back to stock, I'd like to explore what other options are available.

Any advice please?

You could comment here or send me email to vkelman AT gmail.

Thanks

I had this issue with two separate Nook Colors, but I just held the power button until it turned off and then after I turned them back on they booted into CyanogenMod.

NOOB

Just here to find solutions to Barnes and Nobles epic run of dropping the ball when it comes to the NC. Trying to get mine back to 1.1.0

HELP

Can't get the downloaded software 1.1.0 to side load on my NC. The nook simply sits there goes to sleep and doesn't sideload the update. Trying to get back to where I was from the 1.2 update which has largely been laughable. Preformed step by step instructions above including renaming the file and I'm still sitting at 1.0.1. Thoughts, suggestions, advice?
