I hope this becomes a sticky. So why is there a need for this? There are some threads to describe the following issues which I, through various sites and threads, have not found answered. I also have the same issues and was unable to use android market as a result. They include:
- can't download market apps
- getting "server error" when trying to get into android market
- tried the youtube "my channel" trick
- tried the google talk login trick
- can't update to stock 1.1.0 from 1.0.1 no matter what you try. the "sideload_update.zip" just won't take!
- pre-rooted 1.1.0 doesn't help me
What is offered in the current threads are:
- Restore to Stock 1.0.1
- Root via Auto-Nooter 2.12.25
- load pre-rooted 1.1.0
Which then leads to the above issues and I've not seen a resolve for a good subset of users across different sites. So if this is YOU, here's the fix I found:
summary version is:
- restore to Stock 1.0.1 via ROM
- restore again to Stock 1.0.1 via B&N Factory reset (which actually works)
- Update to 1.1.0 (which will now work w/sideload file)
- Root 1.1.0 via Auto-Nooter 3.0
Step 1: Reload stock 1.0.1 ROM
Follow the first 8 steps noted in this thread: Restore to Stock 1.0.1 Not Rooted
Once the ROM is finished installing, manually eject your SD Card, go back a menu on clockwork recovery by pushing PWR button and select "reboot".
Once loaded, register your device.
Step 2: Restore to Stock using B&N Factory Restore
Why is this step important? Isn't it redundant? No.
I have found the "step 1" ROM unhelpful in that the file is not the same as actually restoring it via B&N hard reset. Seems like there are some things missing or some bugs which has caused me and perhaps others multiple issues because we build off this file (root, flash pre-root 1.1.0). AND, the 8x power off thing is really tough which I wasn't able to ever do.
To restore to factory - power off. Then hold "power + N (upside down N)" for 6-7 seconds. If it powers off you did it wrong. Try again. When you let go, it should still be on the welcome screen. Let go and then it will go to a screen that reads "installation fail." Power down and do the same again. This time, it will ask you to restore to factory. Hit "N" twice and it will start clearing and restore to factory!
Step 3: Load "sideload_update.zip" to update to 1.1.0
Now the file will actually take! Go to B&N 1.1.0 Update file and download the B&N file. You can save it or rename it to "sideload_update.zip" noticing the lower case and the subtracting of "1-1".
With your NC on, plug your usb cable into your PC. Copy the zip file to the main directory of the NC. Once this is done, unplug the usb cable, and put the NC on sleep (tap power button).
The file should take in 2-3 minutes or less. You should see an installation screen that comes on by itself. Once this is done, you will be officially updated to 1.1.0! congrats!
Step 4: Using auto-nooter 3.0, Root 1.1.0
Go here: Rooting Nook Color 1.1.0 and scroll down to "READ TO ROOT / HOW TO DO IT." Follow the guide up to where it reads (on the guide, not the NC) "congratulations - your nook is rooted."
Step 5: Login to Google via youtube / market
The initial sign-in seems like it never takes but you can try it. there's no harm. Ultimately you can just hit "skip step", check the two boxes telling you to send data/location to google, and then try to login via youtube. I got a network error 401 when logging into youtube via "my channel" but I was able to access android market and download apps. I downloaded "Launcher Pro" first (some people say it helped them to do that) and then whatever other apps I needed.
ENJOY!
Credit goes to all the contributors to the already current stickies on rooting nook color, restoring to stock, etc. I have not done anything except to pull some things together and provide a very important step is restoring to factory which provides a working base file to build off of.
If this has helped you, please let me (us) know. It seems there are others who have had this issue without any resolve.
