I not so tech savvy, so i am not sure if it was the pie update. the phone just had a scheduled update and i decided to click the update button.

the attached pic shown icons like gallery, camera, telephone are not the same any more. how can i revert to the original icons?

Even the home and return buttons have changed.

How can i get back my original buttons back? I am so saddened by this.

You can download a theme or icon pack in Samsung themes, as for navigation bar pull down your notifications panel and long press navigation bar ,you can use the button and reorder it or no buttons and swipe up gestures.

Mustang, can i uninstall the update and so revert to my original state?

You can but you need to know how to use Odin, plus it will prompt you to update again which you'll need to disable then not get future OS updates and important security updates and some apps will eventually not perform with older OS version.

Is that worth it?

You probably had the Oreo icons. There are a few Oreo icon sets available. Just find one you like and install it like any other app.

Actually, you have Samsung Themes there. Try it and see if there are any icon sets you like.
