Hello Fourm,

I have invested several of hours trying to root my EVO 4g, but have failed miserably.

Some of the techniques I tried was:

  • GingerBreak V1.2 with USB Debugg on and Formatted SD
  • UnrEVOked 3 with HBOOT Installed on Windows 7
  • and RUU Supersonic S Sprint, to Downgrade from Gingerbread.

These are some of the problems I ran into.

Gingerbreak > Never passed the Root Process
Unrevoked > Message " firmware too new?"
RUU Supersonic > Ended with an error

Is there any advice you can give to this newbie or should I just give up in life?
But in all seriousness, I am very interested in finding a solution to this problem
or even a reason to why it is not working, (too new of a update?)
I have never rooted my evo, but I am very interested in doing so.

Thank you all for reading and commenting!

Peace

Au contraire, mon fr?re

Pending as to how much effort you want to go through, rooting is indeed possible.

reinstall original PC36IMG which will reload the orignal recovery image.
apply all updates until you're to 2.3.3
install a custom recovery (ie clockwork mod)
install root

you're rooted - this assumes you've initally got your phone set to S-Off (like using unrevoked forever)

Yes you need s-off, but many don't. That is why many say no it isn't possible.

Hi All,
From what I had read, there really isn't a instructional feed/post to accomplish this root for 2.3.3 EVO.
I have been looking into the Clockwork Mod and the blog stated "Your phone must be rooted prior to the installation of ClockworkMod"
Source :How To Install ClockworkMod Recovery On Your Android Phone
I assume that in the future we may see a software developer bring something to the table.

Thank you all how replied in this post
Take it easy!

If you accepted the OTA and did not flash unrevoked forever before hand, rooting is NOT possible at all right now.

Moved to root section.

If 2.3.3 isn't possible to root how are there so many roms available that are running off the OTA? I'm confused...

Leaked version on gingerbread has been around a while. Its not the rom, but with the gingerbread update they also updated the bootloader, thus it is locked and has not been cracked yet. I'm surprised we haven't heard anything from the unrevoked team on any status they are at on breaking it open.

its not just HTC but the GB on DroidX can't be rooted yet. you need to be on prerelease GB. its been reported Google has been plugging the holes thus making it harder to root

Well Motorola has always tried harder than HTC to keep the bootloader locked.

Well from what I have heard, phones after the E3D HTC is suppose to have unlocked phones. The biggest reasons why they are locked is so people don't flash them to other carriers. Like to Boost, cricket, and etc.
