HOW-TO root your Sprint Hero (condensed and easy to read version)

In desperate need of help! Im in the cmd and none of the recovery images work for me.
In step 8 i tried to use "adb push recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img /sdcard" and also tried the 1.2.3 version. I keep getting a message: cannot stat 'recovery-RA-heroc-v1.2.3.img' : No such file or directoy
I tried to enter the next part "adb shell reboot" and hopefully restart the phone & try the recovery image again but it did not work.
I have no idea what to do. I've come so close I can't give up now. PLEASE HELP!

Is it safe for me to turn off my phone or computer & disconnect usb cable and try again!?

Yeah i had to coouple times before.

I read SlappyWag's problem. It sounds very similar to mine but it looks lyke he overcame the issue. Where do I go from here? Do i just restart computer/phone & pick from where I left off? Or do I start the root process from the beginning? & thanks for responding so quickly, really appreciate it

Should be able to start there. Once you reboot plug phone in command type adb shell if you get # you have root still.

Wow. I restarted my computer & phone. I typed "adb shell" Turns out I did not have root. So i did the process over again. Still having the same problem. Dont know what else to do.

Couple things to check while get to my cp phone dieing. Make sure recovery img didn't get renamed 152 instead1.5.2,make sure its in tools folder of sdk and usb debugging is on

If that doesn' work try putting the path to the folder like cd\Android_stuff\android-sdk-windows\tools or however you did the first time then try push the recovery img

Hey beezy420 thanks for your help but i finally fixed my problem in whats seems to be an unorthodox way. I went in the sdk/tool folder and removed the ".img" extension from the recovery. Pure luck that I did that. I re downloaded the recovery image so now I had 2 of the v1.5.2 I went to remove the image from the sdk and place it on the desktop with the other one. Thats when the computer let me know that I have a duplicate. But heres the wierd part, it showed the file like this: "recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2.img.img" <-- notice the 2 img's. Weird. I decided I would remove ".img" from the name of the file since the computer showed 2 of them & it seems to have worked.

Yeah... Windows does that SOMETIMES, and not others. Its hard to determine what... maybe the browser used?

At first i thought it could be a browser problem. I used firefox on my first few attempts. Then switched 2 Chrome...but I don't think it was the browser

Hello all. I'm trying this, and in Step 8, after entering the "reboot recovery" command, my phone reboots, but I don't get to a recovery menu. It just boots like always to the lock screen. What am I missing or doing wrong?

Nevermind. I rebooted while holding down the home key, and got to the menu and created my backup.

Unless this is because of a larger issue, then please, let me know what I did wrong, and what I need to do to fix it.

Thanks!

I don't know why this happens sometimes. It happened to someone else's phone I helped out, too. Your right though, it still reboots into recovery via traditional method

I just continued on, and got the 2.1 option 3 loaded. So far so good. Thanks to everyone for all the awesome information!

Guys,

I have been away from the game for a while and have some questions..

I am rooted with the original heroc 1.2.3 recovery image. What is the easiest way to upgrade the recovery image to version 1.52? Or is it even needed?

If I flash a 2.1 rom, will I still be able to boot to the recovery image and also be able to mount my sd card? I ask because I remember reading that some people were having problems doing so.

I am using Linux but have access to a pc.

Thanks.

I'm not sure what features are different between 1.2.3 and 1.5.2, but I don't think it'll be an issue as long as you can wipe data/factory restore, dalvik and SD:EXT partition if you are using apps2sd (maybe not even the last one).

im new and don't no much but i have a simple question for anyone who can help... how do i get 2.1 upgrade on my hero for sprint. i'm holding out for the evo but in the mean time i would love to have this update to my hero. thx!

You have two choices.Either root then flash the rom or you can run the 2.1 ruu.I wouldn't ruu,but if you you want to read all the cautions with running ruu before you do it.If you go with rooting and flashing just follow the guide on first page.If you have any problems just ask.
