HOW-TO root your Sprint Hero (condensed and easy to read version)

Quick question I successfully rooted my Hero, but the laptop that i used at first got damaged and i know longer have it anymore, does that matter, or do I need to do something with the new laptop?

Don't even need a computer to remove bloatware anymore. I used "root explorer" from the app market (need root) to delete all the Sprint BS. Phone doesn't run any different or faster but it made me feel special :-)

Imconfused on what exactly your saying but you can start over it wont hurt anything. Which command are you at on step 6

after enterin "adb shell" it just gave a $ sign and the cursor blinking after it...nothing happened so i assumed it was done and that i enter the next line of code and hit enter (next line being "chmod 0755 /data/local/asroot2" it did nothing but return me the original prompt text C:Andrid_stuff.......tools. so i enter the last line of code from step six and it said the system can not find the specified path.

I would close com propmt then open and start at step 5( adb devices).Try again if you have problems ill be around for a couple hours

it seems to be hanging up after i enter "adb shell". i just get the dollar sign with a blinking cursor

ok, well that worked but now i got another prob. i got all the way to reboot recovery and upon reboot my phone freezes at the "HTC" screen. any ideas?

Its takes just a little bit for the recovery menu to come up.If it doesn't then pull battery then before you power it on hold the home key and pres the power button dont let go of the home button til you see the black/green menu.

menu isnt coming up. held it for 2 min know and counting

ok, so its still frozen. i think its toast, isnt it...(Expletive deleted)!!!!

ok, got it to boot up. start from the beginning or....? should i do a reset then try again?

Start over u think the recovery img didn't go right.

i dunno. how would i tell if it installed correctly? it boots up normally now. other than that, no clue. i read somewhere i should partition my SD card but didnt see that in the instructions. best to do that now or after root? I can see the recovery img on my SD card when i mount to PC, but other than that...no clue. should i try the other/older img?

ok, so i discovered that the img file got renamed from 1.5.2.img to 152.img. question, how long doe it it take to boot up after i enter the reboot recovery command? been on the HTC screen for about 6 min now

so, after hours spent tryin to root yesterday, i discovered that i did not have the JDK and the a file was mis named....none the less im gonna keep goin and try to root once again. although i think i might have a prob with my bootloader. i cant get the rocovery menu up at all. when i enter "reboot recovery" in cmd console it reboots and hangs at the HTC screen. doe the same thing when i try the Home key and pwr button thing. but it still boots up normally otherwise. Anyway, these are the issues that seem to repeat themselves. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Im just really curious as to what actually happened to my phone. i tried a factory reset/wipe and it froze at the HTC screen again... pulled battery and rebooted, came up fine but did not wipe.

so, does anyone have any ideas or am i just S.O.L.??

I cant do anything past Step 5. Every command entered in Step 6 comes back with the following error message: "____ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file."

It recognizes my Hero in Step 5.

Is asroo2 unziped and placed in the tools folder of the SDK? if not do so, and also make sure the recovery is there as well

I've read your posts and honestly, I don't know what you did.
If the JDK wasn't installed, you wouldn't have been able to do anything with ADB properly. I would start from the beginning? But if your phone isn't booting, then I don't know what else to tell you. If you can get the phone to boot, let me know, if not we may need to try some fastboot stuff and use the RUU to get the phone bootable again.
